The new 2025 BYD Shark is going on sale in several markets around the world. One of these markets is Mexico. We take this opportunity to drive the all-new BYD Shark and see how it compares to other new pickup trucks on size and available features. It just so happens that we have a Tesla Cybertruck and a Rivian R1T available for comparison. Let’s go!
The new BYD Shark is a Chinese-designed and Chinese-built midsize pickup truck. It’s a plug-in hybrid that works and behaves much like an all-electric vehicle. The Shark is equipped with a 29.6 kWh high-voltage battery that allows it to go around 60 miles on electricity alone (according to the automaker). We were unable to fully verify it during our time with this pickup truck. When the battery runs low, the 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine kicks in and starts to charge the battery. The turbo engine can also provide motive power to the front wheels. There is no engine driveshaft that goes to the rear. BYD calls this plug-in hybrid powertrain – DMO.
The Shark is equipped with two electric motors, one in the front and one in the back. This allows for all-wheel-drive capability. BYD says that the Shark will be able to go a total of 520 miles on a full charger and a full tank of gasoline. The 0-60 MPH performance is listed at 5.7 seconds 0-62 mph. I used our SoloDL gps device to clock a 5.6 seconds 0-60 MPH acceleration in El Paso, Texas.
The BYD Shark has a relatively short 128.3 inch wheelbase, but it has a spacious cabin. I am nearly 6’3” and I was able to comfortably seat behind myself in the rear seats. The interior room is similar to that in the Rivian R1T. The Shark has a 5-foot bed, while the Rivian has a 4.5-foot bed.
The Tesla Cybertruck is a much larger pickup truck. We consider the Cybertruck a full-size pickup as it has a 145-inch wheelbase. This is approximately the same wheelbase as under a Ford F-150 crew-cab with a 5.5-foot bed.
