The rumors were true! General Motors is preparing the all-new 8.3L Duramax V8 turbo diesel for their 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and 2027 GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks! They call it “The Mongoose”! We call it “The Megamax”! Whoa!
Here is an official statement from General Motors:
“We wanted to give you a heads up that GM will release the official teaser (the Mongoose video) for the highly anticipated, all-new Duramax 8.3L Turbo-Diesel V8 that will be the heart of the refreshed 2027 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD.“
“A certain cross-town rival’s HD V8 diesel engine may be referred to as the ‘scorpion’. But nature (or GM in this case), always engineers a better predator – the Mongoose. Built to dominate, this all-new Duramax 8.3L Turbo-Diesel V8 engine packs power, capability and confidence. It’s a beast.“
Why call it the Mongoose? As GM states above – a mongoose is a predator that is known for hunting scorpions. The “scorpion” just happens to be the nickname for Ford’s original 6.7L Power Stroke V8 turbo-diesel. It’s interesting that GM is specifically targeting Ford with this teaser. GM does not mention anything about Ram HD or Cummins-powered pickup trucks.
