The all-new 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 show off their class-leading new engines, as well as a class-leading tow rating. We have all of the details, an engine deep dive, and a hands-on video. Let’s dig in!
The new truck’s maximum towing rating goes up from 13,300 lbs to 13,700 lbs when equipped with the new 5.7L V8 and a maximum towing package. This is a class-leading number. The 2027 Ford F-150 is rated up to 13,500 lbs when equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and a its maximum towing package.
GM’s new half-ton pickup trucks will offer four distinct engine options: an enhanced 2.7L TurboMax I4, a mostly unchanged 3.0L Duramax I6, a new Gen-6 5.7L V8, and a new Gen-6 6.6L V8.
Here are the most important numbers. All engine options are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Why is the smaller V8 rated to tow the most? GM says it has to do with customer demand. They say more people currently buy the smaller V8 to tow heavier trailers. As such, they focused on their new 5.7L V8 for their maximum towing capability. It may also be a bit easier to satisfy all of the J2807 SAE towing standard requirements with the smaller V8.
Let’s take a closer look at the new V8 engines. The new 5.7L V8 carries the L76 designation. The new 6.6L V8 is labeled L78.
New V8 engines feature:
- Larger throttle bodies for more air flow that lead to new intake runners
- Higher compression ratio for more efficient fuel burn
- Increased displacement
- Dual-fuel system that combines direct injection and port fuel injection for better power, efficiency, and emissions.
- New engine lubrication with a continuously variable oil pump, on-engine oil cooler, and reworked oil feed locations.
These new V8 engines are produced at the GM’s Flint (Michigan) Engine Operations, Tonawanda (New York) Propulsion, and St. Catherines (Ontario, Canada) Propulsion plants in North America.
2.7L TurboMax I4
The newly enhanced 2.7L TurboMax I4 “L4B” base engine is now rated at 350 hp @ 5,200 and 455 lb-ft of torque @ 3,000. It’s an improvement of 40 hp and 25 lb-ft over the outgoing L3B engine. GM says the engine has the following updates.
- New turbocharger
- Upgraded fuel injection system
- Improved active thermal management system
- Redesigned pistons
The company says this results in increased performance, drivability improvements, noise and vibration refinements, and improved towing ability. This engine drops the 8-speed automatic in favor of the 10-speed. Trucks equipped with the new TurboMax are rated at maximum of 9,400 lbs of trailer towing capacity. It’s actually 100 pounds less than the rating on the outgoing 2026 trucks.
The new TurboMax is now the most powerful base engine in the class!
- 2027 Ford F-150 XL 3.0L TT V6: 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.
- 2027 Ram 1500 Tradesman 3.6L V6: 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque
- 2027 Toyota Tundra SR 3.4L TT V6: 348 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque
- 2027 GM 1500 : 350 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque.
3.0L Duramax I6
The 3.0L Duramax I6 turbo-diesel returns with the same 305 hp 3,750 rpm and 495 lb-ft of torque @ 2,750 rpm. It’s rated to pull up to 12,100 lbs of trailer weight. The Duramax also gets several improvements: revised DEF level indicators, piston design, turbo vane design, next-generation NOx sensor, sealing and fuel injector corrosion protection updates.
All engines other than the base 2.7L TurboMax are available with an optional 34-gallon fuel tank. This is a very welcomed addition. When combined with an efficient 3.0L Duramax engine, GM says these trucks can go up 900 miles before refueling.
DEF tank grew by two gallons (by 37%).
Most new 2027 truck configurations offer an optional 34-gallon fuel tank. When paired with the 3.0L Duramax I6, GM says this truck can go over 900 miles on one fill up.
