Ford is pitching the upcoming Fathom EV for its value, and this capability helps its case.

The 2028 Ford Fathom is still a little way off from its big reveal, but the automaker is teasing out some more information about what we can expect come next year. One of the big selling points of this small pickup (and most other modern EVs) is bidirectional charging capability. On Tuesday, a blog post from Ford confirmed the Fathom will offer an integrated inverter that can provide power to your home, either as a supplement to your standard grid hookup or as a backup when the grid goes out. As long as you have the necessary hardware installed in your home, that is.

See, while the truck will be capable of both receiving and providing electricity when either is needed, you’ll need some extra hardware to do it. Much like GM and other automakers, Ford is pitching the Fathom as part of a whole system, wherein you’ll need the company’s Home Power Station (and a Home Backup Power Panel, if you want outage protection) as part of the deal. However, Ford is also updating those pieces of equipment, and say they will cost 60% less than the first-generation of backup hardware we saw with the F-150 Lightning.

When it launches next year, the 2028 Ford Fathom is currently slated to go on sale at a $28,350 MSRP, and have the option for bidirectional AC power through that onboard inverter. While we don’t have a full picture on pricing to get your home fully set up for the Fathom and the necessary charging station/backup equipment, it’s likely you’ll be able to get it all sorted out for somewhere in the low-$30,000s, including the truck itself, wherein the company says the Fathom will be able to provide a projected 10 kW of AC power to your home (more than enough to keep the critical appliances going for awhile).
