The updated 2027 Chevy Colorado and the 2027 GMC Canyon may just be the most powerful midsize pickup trucks next year! We are talking about significantly more horsepower than a new Toyota Tacoma Hybrid, Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, and others. There is one exception though. Let’s dig in!
How is this possible? It’s thanks to the enhanced 2.7L “L4B” TurboMax I4 engine that GM just announced for their full-size Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 pickup trucks. The new L4B is replacing the existing L3B engine. The L4B has the same displacement, but it is have turbocharger and thermal system improvements. GM says they worked to improve the noise and vibrations the L4B engine produces. It’s supposed to be smoother than the outgoing L3B.
The final official L4B specification is 350 hp @ 5,200 rpm and 455 lb-ft of torque @ 3,000 rpm.
If this same engine is coming to the 2027 Colorado and the 2027 Canyon, it will be the most powerful in the class with the exception of the Ford Ranger Raptor and its high-performance 3.0L Ecoboost V6.
According to the GM Fleet Order Guide public website, the new 2027 Colorado and the 2027 Canyon are indeed getting the L4B engine.

There is one engine that produces more horsepower than the new L4B TurboMax. It’s the 405 hp engine in the Ranger Raptor. The Tacoma Hybrid system produces a bit more torque with 465 lb-ft. Still, the updated 2027 Chevy Colorado and the 2027 GMC Canyon will gain a performance advantage over the others.
