Ford F-150 Raptor and Chevy Silverado ZR2 fans should be worried because the new 2027 Ram TRX is here. It’s coming soon to a dealer near you. This truck is packing a 777 horsepower supercharged V8 engine and a highly competitive price. Let’s dig in.

Ram keeps the TRX formula the same with a wide-body design, long-travel off-road suspension, and a powerful engine. Except they ratchet up the power, precision, and luxury at least to another level. Let’s start with the powertrain.

The Engine

Under the hood is a 6.2L Hellcat supercharged V8 engine that has been updated and reworked to produce 777 hp @ 6,500 rpm and 680 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm. Ram says that the engineers took learnings from a variety of supercharged V8 engines that the company produced in the past, and they combined it all into this engine.

The power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed ZF 8HP95 automatic transmission and a 3.55-to-1 rear axle ratio. Ram says this is good enough to send this big and heavy truck 0-60 MPH in 3.5 seconds. They say this truck can knock out a 1/4-mile run in 12.2 seconds. As a reminder, this truck is wearing massive 325 mm wide all-terrain tires that are 35 inches in diameter.

This truck’s top speed is still 118 MPH as it is limited by the all-terrain tires.

As you can see, this engine has never been known for efficiency. It’s rated at 10 mpg in the city, 14 mpg on the highway, and 12 mpg combined. Can one eke out more efficiency from this giant truck in “Snow” mode? We will have to test it on the Denver 100 MPG loop and find out.

The 4WD System

The new TRX uses the same Borg-Warner BW 48-13 full-time 4×4/AWD transfer case. It offers a variable front-to-rear power split. It’s a 40/60 split in the Auto mode. It’s 45/55 in the Wet/Snow mode. It’s 45/55 in the Tow mode. It’s a more tail happy 25/75 in the Baja mode. The front to rear power split is 50/50 in the Off-road with 4L “low-range”. The low-range gearing provides a 2.64-to-1 reduction.

The 1st gear provides a 4.71-to-1 ratio. The crawl ratio can be calculated: 4.71 x 2.64 x 3.55 = 44.142-to-1. This is not a super low crawl ratio, but this truck is not meant to be the ultimate rock crawler. It’s really meant for high-speed desert running, but it should crawl rocks if you ask it too.

The Suspension

The suspension has the same overall mechanical specs as before. The TRX is about six inches wider than a Ram 1500 it’s based on. It has about 11.8 inches of ground clearance. The active dampers are Bilstein Blackhawk e2 with a 355mm diameter. The 4WD transfer case and damper tuning has been updated for this truck to incorporate all the learning from the original 2021-2024 TRX and the new 2025+ Ram RHO.

The suspension and body work offer a 31-degree approach angle, a 25.2-degree departure angle, and a 21.8-degree breakover angle.

The Interior

The new TRX is more luxurious than before. You see and touch leather surfaces on the dash, the steering wheel, and the seats. There is red stitching throughout. The truck includes red seatbelts, which is a nice touch.

Other than that – the truck includes the larger 14.5-inch center infotainment screen. You can use this screen to configure and understand all of the different driving modes. The interior features all the comfort features you may expect. This truck has heated/ventilated and massaging front seats. It has heated/ventilated rear seats. This one has an optional panoramic sunroof.

The truck has a heads up display, paddle shifters, and Ram’s hands-free highway driving mode.

The Price

The truck has a starting price of $74,995 plus the $25,000 29Q package plus the $2,795 destination charge. All this comes out to a starting price of $102,790. This truck has several options with a final as-tested price of $107,315.
