The Chevy Silverado 4500, 5500, and 6500 medium duty commercial trucks are being discontinued after September 30, 2026 when production of these trucks comes to an end. Here is what’s going on. Let’s dig in!

This iteration of the GM medium duty commercial trucks made its debut at the 2018 Work Truck Show in Indianapolis. The TFLtruck team was there to bring you all the news. GM designed and built these heavy trucks in collaboration with International (formerly Navistar). These trucks are being manufactured by International at the Springfield, Ohio facility. These Chevrolet Silverado MD trucks are being made there in conjunction with the International CV platform mates.

International is selling this Ohio factory to Roshel – a Canadian-based defense manufacturer. This facility transfer was announced on March 30, 2026.

Chevy Silverado MD lineup has not had stellar sales success in the United States. Chevrolet sold 1,273 of these commercial truck in the USA in Q1 of 2026. This represents a -37.4% decrease over Q1 of 2025. For comparison, Ford sold 2,331 F-650 and F-750 “heavy trucks” over the same period (Q1 2026).

Does GM have any other heavy commercial trucks for sale in the USA? Yes. General Motors has a relationship with Isuzu with co-branded LCF (Low Cab Forward) class 4, 5, and 6 trucks. Judging by GM’s fleet order guide, the company will continue selling these heavy LCF trucks for the 2027 model year.

If you are looking for a 4WD heavy commercial truck, the Silverado MD offers 4×4 models. Ford offers 4×4 on their commercial trucks that goes up to F-600. Ram HD offers 4×4 for their 4500 and 5500 trucks. While 4WD versions of the GM/Isuzu LCF trucks exist – these are rare indeed.

Let us know what you think about this news. Which heavy truck is your favorite? Is it a Silverado MD, International CV, a Ford F-450 through F-750 lineup, or Ram 4500-5500 commercial trucks?
