The refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD gets a second generation of the L5P 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8. The engine has been updated with the latest fuel injection, combustion, valvetrain, and turbocharger design in order to improve power and emissions. I want to find out what it’s like in the real world on efficiency.

TFL runs on Sinclair fuels, check out the Sinclair DINOPAY app and start saving as much as $0.10 or more per gallon on your next fill-up.

The latest Duramax V8 is rated at 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. The engine is still mated to the 10-speed Allison-branded heavy-duty automatic transmission and a 3.42-to-1 rear axle ratio. The truck I am testing is a fully-optioned and luxurious High Country trim. The truck is equipped with a 36-gallon fuel tank in this crew cab configuration.

This is a first impromptu test as I combine some city and highway driving on this 70+ mile loop. It was a relatively windy day, and I came away fairly impressive with the refinement and efficiency of this new powertrain.

Check out the video for all the details. Also, take a look at the Ike GauntletTM – the world’s toughest towing test with this truck.

Video: Every Trim of the All-new 2023 GMC Canyon In One Place at the Same Time!

Are you interested in the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon, but you are unsure about which one is best for you? No worries. Here is a complete video walk-through of every new Canyon pickup truck that is coming to market this year. Check it out.

It all starts with the 2023 Canyon Elevation model. This is the only one that can be had with 2WD or 4×4 options. All other new GMC Canyons will be sold exclusively in the 4×4/AWD configuration. All new GMC Canyons get a wide stance and a lifted suspension that you will find on the 2023 Chevy Colorado Trailboss and Colorado ZR2 pickup trucks. They all come with a 4-door crew cab and a 5’2” bed.

All new 2023 Canyon pickup trucks come with a high-output version of the 2.7-liter turbocharged I4 engine with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque – that is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 2023 GMC Canyon Elevation 2WD starts at $38,395 before destination charges. The Elevation 4×4 starts at $41,695.

Next up is the Canyon AT4 4×4. This truck gets a slightly larger and more aggressive Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tire that is 32.1 inches in diameter. The Canyon Elevation Territory AT tires measure 31.6 inches. The AT4 gets its own monochromatic look and starts at $45,395.

Next is the Canyon Denali 4×4. This is a more luxurious pickup truck that comes with 20-inch wheels and 33-inch tire diameter. The Denali’s interior stands out from the rest with nice wood and metal trim. It’s not as plush as a Sierra 1500 Denali interior in my opinion, but it’s nice nonetheless. The Canyon Denali starts at $52,495.

Finally, there is the Canyon AT4X off-road truck. This is GMC’s take on the new Colorado ZR2. The AT4X has a taller stance, DSSV spool-valve Multimatic dampers, front/rear locking differentials, and 33-inch Terrain MT tires. The AT4X interior stands out with red and white trim and theme throughout. The Canyon AT4X comes with red seat belts – this was inspired by the new Corvette. The AT4X starts at $56,995.

The Latest 2024 Toyota Tacoma Teaser: It’s Hiding a Secret in Its Bed!

Anyone keeping count of 2024 Toyota Tacoma teasers? I’ve lost track.

It’s a new week, so you know what that means: Another round in the drip-drip-drip of new Tacoma teasers in the final days until Toyota finally reveals the truck. At least, we should be in the final days (what other obscure things are there to tease anymore?).

So, what little nugget do we get this time? Officially, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma will get a JBL ‘Flex’ portable speaker that stows in the dashboard. “Bring your tunes from the dash to the campsite,” is about all the automaker says on today’s announcement, if you could call that an announcement.

However, there are a couple more clandestine clues hiding in the truck’s bed.

One is a bit more obvious: There’s a lip on the edge of the tailgate that may help with the Taco’s everyday aerodynamics. When the tailgate is closed, at least, that may help handle the air pass over the rear of the truck just a little bit easier. It appears the track system for the bed tie-downs is also still there, though we’re a bit perplexed about what’s going on between those bedrails and the tailgate. We can’t see much in the image above, but perhaps there’s something more than meets the eye there too.

A Bluetooth speaker isn’t huge news, we know, but we still want to give you every piece of 2024 Toyota Tacoma information we can, no matter how mundane. After all, this is an explosively popular truck (by far the bestseller in the midsize segment), and at least Toyota did share far more impactful details about the TRD Pro model. It will have hybrid “iForce Max” power, for a start, while we also got a look at its wheel, brake and shock setup. There’s also an overlanding-focused Trailhunter trim in the works.

If you’re frustrated that we there’s little more actual news about the Tacoma at the moment, we’re right there with you. We also just want to see the truck already. With just how much of a tease Toyota’s being at the moment, we shouldn’t have much longer to wait until the full truck actually breaks cover. Or someone leaks it, which is a virtual certainty with a huge reveal like this.

GM Recall: More Than 40,000 Chevrolet Silverado Medium-Duty Trucks at Risk of Catching Fire

A brake pressure switch in Chevrolet Silverado medium-duty trucks may catch fire.

General Motors notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) earlier this month of a fire-risk issue affecting current-generation Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD models. According to the notification, “the brake pressure sensor assembly may leak brake fluid into the brake pressure switch and cause an electrical short-circuit.”

The issue impacts 40,428 trucks built between the 2019 and 2023 model years. GM advises owners to park their trucks otuside and away from structures until the recall repairs are complete. However, at the moment the automaker says it is not aware of injuries related to the problem.

Chevrolet Silverado recall - medium duty trucks

To date, GM recorded 21 incidents of this brake pressure sensor failure. 11 of those incidents resulted in an actual fire, either generating smoke or visible flames. Through its investigation, it narrowed down the issue to the zinc-nickel plating and sealant it uses to inhibit corrosion inside the assembly. Over time, the sealant may delaminate, allowing brake fluid to leak through and cause a short-circuit. The issue could start a fire, even when the truck is switched off and unattended.

GM says it will send an interim notice to Silverado medium-duty owners around May 29, 2023. Once parts are available to actually fix the problem, a second letter will go out and dealers will inspect and relace the master cylinder pressure sensor and wiring harness, free of charge.

Owners can contact Chevrolet’s customer service line at (800)-424-9153 for more information (using the recall number N222375270).

Video: The 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Is a Beast – I Raced It Off-Road from Vegas to Reno

2023 chevy colorado zr2 vegas to reno off-road race first drive

The all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 is much improved over the outgoing model. It has a new turbocharged 2.7L I4 engine with 310 horsepower. It had more ground clearance and larger tires. It has DSSV spool-valve dampers and front/rear lockers. What’s the best way to see what it’s made of? How about “racing” it off-road from Vegas to Reno? This is exactly what Chevrolet had in mind.

Las Vegas, NV to Reno, NV is an annual off-road race that is organized by the Best in the Desert (BITD) association. This year’s race (2023) is in August. Chevy, Chad Hall Racing, and BITD got together to organize this first drive event for the new Colorado ZR2. This is a tall task because the original plan was to drive nearly 440 miles of punishing off-road terrain in under three days.

Of course, real racers in real off-road racing vehicles can do this route in between 7-14 hours, but we are driving all-stock pickup trucks on a route we have never seen before.

Join the video below for all the antics! TFL team drove the red truck with the number 7301 (Smirnov/Pearson). We completed the 350 miles of the racing route without a single flat tire or any damage.

The new 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 goes on sale now (is starting to ship from the factory in Missouri). The starting price for a Colorado ZR2 is around $48,000. The red truck I am driving has a price of just over $50,000. The ZR2 Desert Boss package pushes the price of the ZR2 to around $60,000.
