This is what happens when Toyota imagines an off-road racing truck – it’s the #84 Tacoma TRD ProRunner concept that Toyota is showing this week at the SEMA 2024 show in Las Vegas, NV. It’s a new two-door XtraCab with retro graphics, hybrid power, and racing equipment. Let’s dig in!

The #84 is a reference to the NASCAR machine piloted by Jimmie Johnson. He says that he took his driver’s test in his uncle’s Toyota pickup truck when he was 16 years old. It’s a cool story and a cool concept truck.

The wheelbase of the Tacoma two-door XtraCab and a four-door DoubleCab trucks is the same (131.9 inches long). It’s not a far stretch to imaging a Tacoma TRD Pro with two doors and a longer 6-foot bed. This TRD ProRunner appears to retain much of the 2.4L turbo I4 hybrid powertrain of the production truck. It means it’s packing at least 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.

The truck is wearing large BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM3 tires. It uses FOX Quick Switch 3 (QS3) 2.5-inch diameter dampers from a production 2025 Tacoma TRD Pro. In the bed, it has a sports bar with forward and rear facing off-road lights. In the bed, there is racing-style fuel tank/cell and a spare tire mount. Inside are the IsoDynamic suspended seats with four-point racing harnesses.
