New gauges and modes through an over-the-air update aim to improve the Rivian R1S and R1T experience.

According to Rivian, their new and improved drive modes UI, has been recalibrated. They improved the capability and incoming information for both of their trucks. These updates will allow the driver to access more information about the trailer they’re pulling. Information that wasn’t available before, like various temperatures, motor loads and trailer tech is a welcome sight to Andre.

In addition, the ability to tow has been enhanced thanks to a system than “learns” about the trailer you’re pulling. The vehicle itself can figure out the weight, based on its drag on the Rivian. It approximates the weight, and it gives you a revised range based on that trailer’s weight.

Rivian also points out that there’s a newly introduced in-bed camera.

There’s more: the off-road mode has been updated as well. There’s a brand-new data view which give you real-time mechanical and geographical information. Among the displayed data, pitch and roll along with real time motor temps. In the past, some Rivian owners have mentioned issues with overheating, making the vehicle stop. Now, knowing these temps, the driver can ease off, letting the motors cool off. According to Rivian, they can cool, “in a matter of seconds.”

An interesting note: The front motor in the Rivian R1T was working much harder than any of us previously knew. Give that electric pickup trucks are still new, we assumed that the rear motor(s) took on a higher percentage of the workload. In this case, we’re able to see, real time, what’s going on during the tow.

In this video, Andre rides with Carl from Rivian, and they demonstrate many of the updates.

By the way, these OTA updates are available for all Rivian vehicles – including older models.
