The INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster is one of the latest new off-road pickup trucks on the market. It’s a very good and focused off-road pickup truck. How would you make it better? How about custom-built portal axles and 37-inch all-terrain tires? Let’s dig in!
The Grenadier Quartermaster is a British design with best-of-breed components and German engineering. It’s built in France and it’s on sale in the U.S. It’s a spiritual successor to the old-school Land Rover Defender 130 trucks of the past. This pickup truck prioritizes off-roading when it comes from the factory.

The Quartermaster is a midsize pickup truck with a 127-inch wheelbase. It has solid axles front and rear. It has low-geared axles (4.10-to-1) and a full-time 4WD system with low range. This particular one has selectable locking differentials in the front and the rear. It has impressive articulation and good comfort while going over tough terrain.
Power comes from a 3.0-liter inline-6 BMW B58 turbocharged engine. It’s rated at 282 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The EPA rates this truck at 14 MPG highway and combined. I got 16.9 MPG when driving it from Denver, Colorado to Moab, Utah (approximately 350 miles).
Can you make it batter and unstoppable off-road? Yes. Our friend Jay Couch shows us what he did with his Quartermaster truck he calls “The Smurf”. There is no modification to the suspension. The portal axle housings provide just over four inches of lift. This directly translates to ground clearance. The stock truck is rated at 10.4 inches of ground clearance.
Next, you can add some skid plates a different front bumper and a rear spare tire carrier. Now, you have a tripple-locked off-road truck that you can simply “point and shoot” up or down any off-road obstacle. If you get a little too deep, it comes with a front-mounted winch.
