GM Could Add a Midsize Electric Truck to the Hummer Lineup

It definitely makes sense, especially if GM can beat its Big Three rivals to a midsize electric truck

General Motors is reportedly developing a midsize truck to complement the existing Hummer EV lineup.

Over the next three years, the automaker plans to spend a whopping $35 billion to build thirty new electric models. We’ve seen some of that investment make it to market with the GMC Hummer EV truck (and the SUV, from next year). Now, though, people close to the matter say that a midsize, Hummer-branded pickup is on the development fast-track, according to David Welch reporting for Bloomberg News.

It is still in its design concept phase, at GM’s California studio. However, sources say it’s a priority to bring lower-priced models to the market. This is a timely revelation, given today’s reveal of the GMC Sierra EV (more on that below).

For the moment, GM spokespeople have declined to comment.

That’s fairly common, as automakers often will not discuss future products until they’re ready for a formal announcement. A reportedly swift and decisive move to launch a midsize EV truck does make sense, as they could beat Ford, Ram and other “legacy” rivals to the punch, and more effectively compete against the Rivian R1T. With both the extremely large Hummer EV pickup and the full-size Sierra EV already out, selling a midsize Hummer would also give GM bragging rights — however briefly — that it’s the only automaker to offer a comprehensive lineup of electric truck options.

Like the existing Hummer pickup, the upcoming Hummer EV SUV and the Sierra EV, this midsize truck will ride on GM’s new Ultium platform. It’s unclear where its specs might fall, and we’re a long way off from finding those numbers out. If this midsize truck does make it to production, it will fall well short of the Hummer EV’s $110,000-ish asking price, though again it’s far too early to speculate there as well.

We’ll keep an eye out for any other rumblings or a confirmation from GM. In the meantime, check out our coverage of the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 below:
