What does it mean to be a super truck? Is the new 2022 GMC Hummer EV a “super truck”? I go hands-on to find out. A super-truck needs to be outstanding at everything, or (at least) almost everything. We already know the stated performance figures. The 1,000 hp Hummer EV truck is rated at a 3-second 0-60 MPH acceleration. We will have to wait a little longer in order to drag race the new Hummer SUT versus a Ram TRX and a Ford Raptor. In the meantime, let’s look at some of the other features.

GMC Hummer EV Truck

It has driver-selectable drive modes that control steering, suspension, accelerator feel, power, and motor sound. There is a “My Mode” that allows the driver to mix and match these configurations. The Hummer EV is rated to have a 329-mile driving range. It is rated to fast-charge at up to 350 kW – when in 800-volt mode. TFLtruck has not verified this yet, but we hope to do so soon. The Hummer EV drives in 400-volt mode, and it can charge in either 400 or 800-volt settings. All of this is managed automatically. GMC says this system allows the Hummer truck to gain about 100 miles of range in about 10 minutes. This assumes that the DC fast charger and grid are able to provide the needed level of power.

The new Hummer truck has up to 13 inches of front and rear suspension travel. This is approximately the same as what is available from a new Ram TRX or a Ford F-150 Raptor. The TRX and the Raptor do not have height-adjustable suspension or four-wheel steering. The Hummer allows the driver to vary its height by up to 10 inches from its lowest egress mode to the highest Extract off-road setting.

The Hummer comes standard with 35-inch tall all-terrain tires. It is designed to run 37-inch tires with no suspension modifications. The Hummer is rated to tow up to 7,500 lbs – which is less than the Ram TRX (8,100 lbs) and the Ford F-150 Raptor (8,200 lbs). The Hummer’s payload is just over 1,300 lbs. This is on par with the TRX and the Raptor.

Yes, the Hummer’s curb weight is just over 9,000 lbs. Its city efficiency is estimated at 51 MPGe in the city, which is currently the lowest out of large battery-electric vehicles. It does not come with a spare tire, although one or two bed-mounted spare tires are available as an accessory. The Hummer EV Edition 1 truck starts at $110,295 plus destination charges.
