Why is the all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra the way it is? I speak with the truck’s chief engineer – Mike Sweers – to find out. The new Tundra has a new frame, suspension, engine, transmission, interior, infotainment system, and more. It truly is an all-new pickup truck.
The 2022 Tundra no longer has a V8, it can be powered by a choice of two twin-turbo gas V6 engines. It’s either a base 3.5L TT V6 with 389 horsepower or a 3.5L TT V6 hybrid with 437 horsepower. All new trucks use a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
The 2022 Tundra is rated at a maximum of 1,940 lbs of payload and 12,000 lbs of towing. Why are these not class-leading numbers? I ask this and many more questions to the chief engineer.
