Should Ford build and sell a Super Duty Hybrid? If so, what will power such a truck? Could it simply use the new F-150 Hybrid system? It’s not that simple.
The new 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid is gaining popularity and critical acclaim. The F-150 combines a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor and a modular 10-speed automatic transmission. Many residents of Texas and other states (who lost power to their homes during a recent winter storm) are using their F-150 trucks to power some of their appliances.
The F-150 Hybrid V6 produces 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. For comparison, the new Super Duty 7.3L Godzilla V8 is rated at 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. The PowerBoost V6 produces the same power and way more torque. The V6 Hybrid can also deliver good fuel economy. The F-150 4×4 is rated at 24 MPG combined.
However, it would not be that simple to put this F-150 power plant and transmission in the Super Duty. The Super Duty has a different frame and a unique heavy duty 10-speed automatic transmission. While it may not be a direct swap, Ford could potentially use the same principles and add a slightly more powerful electric motor into the heavy duty transmission. They could also give the Super Duty Hybrid a slightly larger battery pack. The F-150 Hybrid uses a 1.5 kWh battery. The heavier Super Duty could use a battery with a larger capacity.
