It’s time to put the new 2027 Ram TRX to its first real-world test. Let’s go as fast as we dare and jump the truck at a motocross park. Yea! Can you actually feel the extra 75 horsepower from the update new 6.2L supercharged Hellcat V8 engine? Let’s dig in!
The power is up from 702 hp to 777 hp at 6,500 rpm. The redline moved up by 250 rpm, and this engine continues to make monstrous power all the way to redline. Is it possible to uncork even more power? Time will tell.
I drove several new TRX trucks on the street, on the highway, and off-road. My impression is that the new engine revs quicker than before, and it turns this heavy pickup truck into a missile (the truck weighs around 6,900 pounds). The TRX is equipped with adjustable launch control mode. You can brake-torque it, and it may just spin all four 35-inch all-terrain tires on pavement.
Ram says that a 3.5-second 0-60 MPH and a 12.2-second 1/4-mile are possible. I was unable to verify these claims at this first-drive event. However, you can be sure we have a drag race already planned.
Ram prepared an off-road course with two distinct jumps. One jump has a steeper launch point. You don’t want to get this one wrong. Ram says to take this one at 45 MPH and they mean it. If you go much quicker, the truck will want to nose dive. The second jump is a more gentle slope and landing zone. You can go as slowly or as quickly as you dare on this one. Since the course is fairly short, I saw a maximum speed of around 62 MPH on this jump. The truck land softly in both cases. This is a testament to the Bilstein Blackhawk e2 actively adjustable shocks.
To answer the question: yes, you can feel the extra 75 horsepower and extra 40 lb-ft of torque. The truck is just that much more eager to launch. We cannot wait to test it further.
