Here is the first drive of the first-ever 2026 GMC Sierra EV AT4 off-road pickup truck. GMC is expanding the Sierra EV lineup of truck with the addition of an Elevation and this AT4 models. GMC invited us to Michigan to try out the new electrified AT4 truck on the highways, roads, and off-road treks. Here’s what happened.
The Sierra EV AT4 rides on a steel coil spring suspension (no air bags). It’s about two inches higher than other Sierra EV trucks. It’s rolling on 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires that are designed specifically for this truck. This AT4 is heavy (nearly 9,000 lbs) and has a lot of power (725 horsepower in this version). The tires must be up to the task.
The truck has just over 32 degrees of approach, 25 degrees of departure, and just over 19 degrees of breakover angle. The ground clearance measures at 10 inches.
The off-road tires do not negatively affect this truck on the highways or during regular driving. It’s still a very quiet and comfortable experience. This truck has a maximum range battery (up to 478 miles of range) and 725 horsepower. It’s a pretty quick truck, but it does not have ridiculous acceleration. I was able to get a relatively good 2.5 miles/kWh while driving this truck north of Detroit on a 39 mile trip.
The AT4 is equipped with all-wheel-steer and special Terrain Mode. During off-road driving, the rear steering operates in a more aggressive fashion. It makes this very large vehicle feel smaller. It’s surprisingly maneuverable. I did not get a chance to put this truck on some challenging off-road obstacles. We will do more testing in Colorado soon.
The Sierra EV AT4 does not have a locking rear differential. It uses brake distribution to manage traction in difficult situations. We will have to put it on a more challenging trail to really test it. The AT4 also does not have a spare tire. This could be an issue if you are planning on using this truck in tough environments.
