Mechanical redundancy to get you home from anywhere...

2025 lexus lx 700h hybrid hidden features secret overtrail

Lexus is celebrating 30 years of the LX SUV with this updated 2025 lineup that includes the first-ever LX 700h Overtrail off-road model and a special new hybrid powertrain. Here are the details.

The Toyota Land Cruiser and the Lexus LX won countless fans around the world due to ultimate durability, longevity, and comfort these trucks offer. The new 2025 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail is no exception.

The Name

First, let’s start with the name. “700h” is the highest numeric designation for any Lexus vehicle that preceded it. This is not just an arbitrary number to designate this flagship SUV. The engineering team in Japan has a formula that translates the power of their latest powertrains and how it may translate to an old school naturally aspirated engine. The “700” refers to a traditional engine that may need about 7 liters of traditional V8 displacement to achieve the 457 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque that this 3.4L twin-turbo V6 electric hybrid is rated at. The lower case “h” in the name stands for “hybrid”.

Mechanical Redundancy

The LX 700h is powered by a turbocharged V6 that is backed up by an electric motor and a 10-speed automatic transmission. This is the same arrangement as the new Tundra and the Sequoia iFORCE MAX powertrains. However, this hybrid Lexus also has a traditional alternator and starter motor. It has an auxiliary 12-volt battery and electric motor clutch disconnect that can switch it to gasoline-only power in case of a high voltage system failure. This type of failure is rare, but the LX 700h has the mechanical redundancy to bring you home from that long adventurous excursion you might be on. What if the V6 engine fails? That can prevent you from driving.

Sealed High-voltage Battery

The high voltage battery is located behind the second row seat (under the cargo area floor). This is a similar location to where the battery is in the Toyota Sequoia. The Lexus LX 700h has an additional water-proof enclosure for this battery to allow for higher water fording capability. Lexus is going to extra lengths in order to provide the longevity and durability that the LX and Land Cruiser brands are built on.

Three Locking Differentials

This truck has a full-time 4WD system. You cannot switch it to rear-wheel-drive. Many other vehicles have a similar system. You can also enable a center locking differential that allocates equal torque to the front and rear axles. However, the LX 700h Overtrail also offers a locking rear and front differentials as well. The driver can rely on electronic traction aides such as the Crawl Control system. The driver may choose to engage the Low-Range 4×4 and all three locking differentials in order to control this truck’s progress over some difficult terrain.

Keeping It Level

The AVS (Adaptive Variable Suspension) and the AHC (Active Height Control) is a hydraulic suspension system that can react to road conditions and off-road terrain in real time. The driver can select the desired ride height as well. The goal of this system is provide comfortable ride and to keep the body of the SUV as level as possible, while the terrain below varies.
