Ask TFL: What’s the Best Diesel Pickup Truck Year or Generation – Duramax or Power Stroke or Cummins?

... but with modern safety equipment!

What is the best diesel pickup truck year or generation? This question comes to us from Jeff B., but there is a twist. Jeff is asking about the best diesel heavy-duty pickup truck with modern safety equipment.

Jeff writes: “I have owned diesel trucks for many years. I am now in the market for a used diesel truck. I will be using it for daily driving and towing an RV (that weighs 10k) once in a while. Doing some research, the answers I have found are not that consistent. My requirements are diesel, updated safety features (like side curtain airbags), and 4×4. What makes, models and years do y’all recommend?

Some of the best HD diesel pickup trucks that come to mind are: the 2002-2003 Ford Super Duty with the 7.3L Power Stroke V8; the 2006 Chevy Silverado HD or Sierra HD with the 6.6L Duramax V8 and a 6-speed Alison transmission; or the 2006-2007 Ram HD with the 5.9L Cummins I6 engine.

However, these older turbo-diesels do not offer many of the modern safety features that Jeff is asking about. What do you think? Please let us know in the comments below.
