Oh, so that's what the VW CEO meant...

Volkswagen of America is planning to resurrect the Scout brand and bring a VW Scout Electric pickup truck and SUV to the U.S. market in 2026. We have two leaked design sketches of the upcoming truck and SUV. This is pretty big news! What is it all about? Let’s dig in.

Almost a month ago, the CEO of the VW Group of America said that Volkswagen is looking to bring an electric pickup truck to the United States. He called it a “chance of a lifetime”. It seemed to be far in the future, and I wrote an opinion about it. I question if it’s too late for Volkswagen to enter the pickup truck market in the United States, even with an electric pickup truck. What I did not know and never considered at the time was – I did not think that Volkswagen would resurrect a storied off-road brand and create a lifestyle vehicle in the process. This changes the game a bit.

Next, Ford CEO, said that the Ford Motor Company is working on a whole new electric pickup truck that is different than the new F-150 Lightning. This new pickup would be built in Ford’s upcoming new facility in Tennessee within the next 2-3 years. Why am I bringing up this Ford story? Ford and Volkswagen are currently partnering and sharing technologies. VW is getting the next Amarok pickup truck that is based on the new Ford Ranger, and Ford is getting VW’s electric vehicle expertise.

Could Ford and VW be collaborating on the new Scout EV pickup truck and SUV? This is possible, but it is only my guess. The return of the Scout brand may mean that this new VW vehicle lineup is positioned to compete against the likes of the Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Wrangler, and (to some extent) the Ford Bronco.

We will have to wait and see how this story develops. In the meantime, here is a VW ID4 crossover towing a trailer on the Ike Gauntlet™ – the world’s toughest towing test.
