Here is how Ford tests and tunes its upcoming new 2022 F-150 Lightning trucks. The cold weather and icy terrain tuning are done at a restricted military base in Alaska. Ford does not disclose the exact location of the base. It may be one that is near the Denali National park in central Alaska. Ford says they sent six pre-production Lightning trucks there to get their dual-motor AWD capability dialed in. Winter temperatures regularly hit -30F around these parts.

Ford’s engineers report that dual-motor tuning poses many challenges. The front and rear electric motors must work in unison to deliver confident driving on the snow and ice. Here are a few cool images from this winter testing location.

Here is a personal look at the new F-150 Lightning. We hope for an opportunity to drive the new Lightning trucks soon. Ford says that the Lightning truck will go on sale in the spring of 2022. We expect this to start in late May or June. Many F-150 Lightning order holders already received notifications that their trucks are being built in May 2022.
