We set out to find and purchase the least expensive diesel Ram HD truck for our next long-term vehicle, but it did not work out. We bought something way nicer instead. Here is what happened.
Over the years, we have been lucky to own several new long-term pickup trucks: 2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel, 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss, 2020 Ford F-250 7.3L V8, 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, 2020 Ford F-150 Raptor, 2021 Ram TRX, and a 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Off-road. As you can see, we have owned full-size trucks, a midsize pickup, and a heavy-duty truck. This is our FIRST long-term turbo-diesel.
At first, we wanted a Ram HD 3500 Tradesman crew cab SRW 4×4 with a high-output 6.7L Cummins turbo-diesel I6 engine and an Aisin 6-speed transmission. Keeping it a Tradesman would keep the price down, but adding the crew cab 4×4 and an H.O. engine drives the price up. This turned out to be a unicorn truck that we would have to order and potentially wait a long time for.
Next, we started looking at Ram HD 2500 Tradesman diesel trucks. Once again we wanted a 4×4 crew cab. Once again, this truck does not currently exist in our local dealership inventory. The result… We got this 2022 Ram HD 2500 Big Horn crew cab 4×4 Midnight Edition. Oh, yea! It’s not the least expensive, but we could get it quickly!
This 2022 Ram HD 2500 diesel is rated at 370 hp @ 2,800 rpm and 850 lb-ft of torque @ 1,700 rpm. This lower-output engine is mated to Ram’s 68RFE 6-speed automatic transmission.
