We want our Big Green project truck to be the best it can, and we are thankful to all of the partners that joined us along the way. This time it’s all about fuel delivery. We ran into several issues with the existing carburetor on the ZZ6 350 cu-in V8 we got from Chevy Performance. Yes, the carburetor went along with the character of the truck, and we have access to an excellent carburetor expert – Ted Ax from AxandAllies.com.
Still, we decided to try throttle body fuel injection, and our friends at Summit Racing provided us with a FiTech system. A fuel injection system will make the truck run smoother at a variety of elevations. We travel between 5,000 ft and 11,000 ft above sea level on a regular basis. It can potentially improve the truck’s fuel consumption.
This was our goal with this latest episode of Project Big Green. However, we did not have all of the components.
There are a lot of other things that need doing on the truck. We went on to replace the rusted out passenger-side fuel tank, and the rear bumper. As is, the truck is getting just about 9 MPG. A single 16-gallon fuel tank does not offer a lot of comfortable cruising range. The second fuel tank will double the range and make Big Green a mean cruising machine.
The black steel plate bumper was functional, but did not do the truck many favors in the appearance department. We knew we could improve the function and looks of Big Green with a replacement chrome rear bumper.
We will tackle the fuel injection system later this month.
We spent an entire day working on the fuel tank, bumper, and more. We also had a ton of fun. Join the good times in the video!
