Ford is ready to throw down against any competitor with the official reveal of the engine specifications and payload/towing ratings. Ram 3500 HD and its 900 lb-ft is no longer the king of the torque wars among pickup trucks, as the latest edition of the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 turbo-diesel in the 2017 Ford Super Duty is rated at 925 lb-ft and 440 hp.
Specifications:
2017 Ford Super Duty
- 6.7L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V8
- 440 horsepower @ 2,800 rpm
- 925 lb-ft of torque @ 1,800 rpm
We recently reported an unconfirmed rating for the new diesel, as we got it wrong. Ford did not push the horsepower and torque to absurd levels (nearly 500 hp and over 1,000 lb-ft of torque). The next generation Super Duty will have to make do with 925 lb-ft of torque for now. Surely, Ram and GM will soon counterattack Ford in this arms race for most torque.
How does this compare to the 2016 Ford Super Duty?
- 6.7L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V8
- 440 horsepower @2,800 rpm
- 860 lb-ft of torque @ 1,600 rpm
The 2017 motor stayed at precisely the same horsepower level, gained a healthy 65 lb-ft of torque, but peak torque now comes in just a little bit later in the rpm range.
Note: the 2017 Power Stroke motor will be available across the F-250, F-350, and F-450 truck lineup. The diesel V8 is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The 6.2L gasoline V8 returns for duty in the 2017 Super Duty. It maintains the same horsepower level as the outgoing version of the motor, but it picks up an additional 25 lb-ft of torque. Maximum torque arrives much earlier: 3,800 rpm versus 4,500 rpm.
2017 Ford Super Duty
- 6.2L gasoline V8
- 385 horsepower @ 5,750 rpm
- 430 lb-ft of torque @ 3,800 rpm
Towing and Payload:
So, what do all these numbers mean in the real world? Is it all about power bragging rights? We will not get a chance to drive these trucks until next week, but Ford also announced the following class-leading payload and towing capability numbers.
Model | Rating |
F-450 Crew Cab 4×4 | Max. gooseneck towing: 32,500 lbs; GCWR: 41,800 lbs |
Regular cab | Max 5th wheel towing: 27,500 lbs |
F-350 Crew Cab 4×4 | Max. gooseneck towing: 32,000 lbs |
F-350 & F-450 Dually | Max conventional/bumper hitch towing: 21,000 lbs |
F-250 & F-350 SRW | Max conventional/bumper hitch towing: 18,000 lbs |
F-350 | Max payload: 7,650 lbs |
F-250 | Max payload: 4,200 lbs |
For comparison, 2016 Ram HD is rated at a maximum payload of 7,390 lbs and maximum gooseneck towing of 31,210 lbs.
Conventional/bumper hitch towing rating of 21,000 lbs does not require a weight distributing hitch, according to Ford. How is this possible? This is mainly thanks to a new 3-inch hitch receiver. Versions of the Super Duty that are rated at or above 15,001 lbs of conventional towing get the 3-inch receiver. It can be fitted with a 3-inch to 2.5-inch and 2.5-inch to 2-inch reducers. Trucks are rated at 15,000 lbs and below, get the 2.5-inch receiver with the 2.5-inch to 2-inch reducer.
Also, the maximum gooseneck rating of 32,500 lbs is only available with a 3-inch gooseneck ball. If you plan to max out your Super Duty, then you also need to make sure your gooseneck trailer has a 3-inch coupler.
We will bring you all the details about the 2017 Super Duty starting next week. In the meantime, here is the most recent interview.
