Is the 3500 series HD pickup truck too small for your job? Fear not, you can step up to the 2014 Ram 4500 or 5500 HD series trucks to get higher payload ratings and more capability. Roman, Nathan, and Mr. Truck take this 4500 HD Crew Cab dually snow plow around Chrysler’s Chelsea proving grounds test track to learn more.
This is a well-appointment Laramie model with all the interior creature comforts that you are used to from the smaller 2500 and 3500 trucks. This particular beast is powered by the 6.4L HEMI V8 with 370 hp @ 4,600 rpm , 429 lb-ft @ 4,000 rpm. The horsepower is turned down a little from the 2500/3500 counterparts to increase durability and longevity. The heavy duty Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission is doing the shifting. The 6.7L Cummins is also available. This truck comes with extra-low 4.44 (as in this tester) or 4.88 rear end gear ratios.
The big HEMI does not cylinder deactivation, but it is only used during “power take-off”. In other words, if you are using a PTU to power a hydraulics system or other accessories, the engine can run in four cylinder mode. Four cylinder mode is not available while driving.
The payload for the 4500 Crew Cab with the HEMI ranges from 7,140 to 7,860 pounds. The maximum towing rating is from 15,950 to 17,950 pounds. This test truck has the as tested price of $55,260.
