A modern Volkswagen Van? What’s the deal-E-ooo? For those of you who are not interested in the Volkswagen Routan which was a rebadged version of the Chrysler Town & Country, there was little other choice in VW’s fleet. Many of us miss the uniqueness, size and good road-manners of the Volkswagen Eurovan and lament its passing. So, what’s the deal with this new(ish) Volkswagen Van lumbering about on our soil?
Roman and I got this photograph when we went to test the 2015 Audi A3 in Northern California. Audi is using this van as their chase and support vehicle. It intrigued me as this vehicle had to be shipped here for this purpose. Speaking to other Audi folk, this isn’t the only Volkswagen Van being used in this way.
It begs the question – will Volkswagen bring back a German-built van to the United States?
Well – no one has an answer and the Germans would probably look bemused by this line of questioning. I mean, why bother when the minivan market is so dry here? Did I ever say “minivan?” Nope – I am wondering if Volkswagen has the schnitzel for entering our cargo-van wars which are heating up.
It would be super cool.
By the way: for those of you looking for a manual transmission in a small, European van: The Volkswagen Eurovan had that option (in North America) until 1993.
Speaking of European-sourced vans…
