2020 Isuzu D-Max – Chevy Colorado Cousin?
The 2020 Isuzu D-Max is based on a similar platform as the Chevrolet Colorado. These trucks share some components, but the 2020 Isuzu D-Max is a completely different animal. Especially with the features available on the U.S. version of the Colorado and GMC Canyon. The running gear and interior are completely unique.
The D-Max is built in Thailand for just about every market, except for ours.
There is a new three-liter 4JJ3 diesel which was recently developed. Based on the older 4JJ1 diesel, it puts out 188 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. There is an updated 1.9-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel as well. Power numbers are not available. We know that the old 1.9-liter RZ4E-TC made 150-hp and around 250 lb-ft f torque.
Both engines come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. Isuzu changed the setup on this transmission which now features a pull-ring-style reverse engagement. An automatic will be available as well. There is an all-new, available 4×4 system too.
What else is new?
The platform, body panels, suspension and electronics is upgraded. Headlights and taillights are available with LEDs and the top trim levels have near-luxury interior components. It’s truly depressing seeing how nice this interior is, compared to its American cousins. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon could use this interior design.
Handsfree communication and control along with bluetooth is available. There will be an available multifunctional, 9-inch touchscreen screen. This comes with navigation along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The higher trim models will get these advanced electronic options along with additional comfort and convenience options.
Cab configurations.
There are three cab configurations available. You can get the regular cab, Space Cab, or Crew Cab model. Engines and 4×4 combinations appear to be available on all cab configuration. If you opt for the off-road/adventure-themed V-Cross version, it is only available as a Crew Cab.
More about the D-Max platform. “In addition to developing a lean, rational assembly structure for the new D-MAX, the use of 980 MPa high-tensile steel plates and other things have made it possible to achieve stronger body rigidity while keeping it lightweight. The application of higher than 390 MPa high-tensile steel plates has increased from 30% to 46%. Body rigidity is up by 20-percent and its rooftop is reinforced. Through the improvements made on the package design, each cab type now features an extended loading platform.” – – Isuzu Motors
When can we get one?
Isuzu stopped selling passenger vehicles in the United States years ago. While other markets around the world work with Isuzu (Great Wall, Holden and – yes Chevrolet), we will not see Isuzu return to our shores any time soon. That’s a shame, this truck looks outstanding and our local market could learn a thing or two from Isuzu’s interior design.
Still, we did track one testing in the USA. You can read about it (here).
