We may finally have some better understanding of what to expect from the new 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 V8 engines. GM has not announced any official specs for the upcoming Gen6 pickup truck V8 engines. We know that GM officially invested $888 million into its Tonawanda Propulsion plant in upstate New York. Here are the latest juicy details about the possible horsepower figures for these new engines. Let’s dig in!

About a month ago there was a leak that suggested there will be two new Gen6 small-block V8 truck engines. The “Chevy 350” is coming back as the new 5.7L V8, and there will be a new 6.6L V8 engine for the light duty pickup trucks. This is a step up from the 5.3L and the 6.2L V8 engines that exist today.

The original small-block GM 5.7L V8 was first introduced in 1967. Now, we are getting a new generation of the engine for its 60th anniversary. Back then this engine was meant for the high performance 1967 Chevy Camaro SS and it was rated at 295 hp.

New Power Numbers?

We have a credible new source that suggests that the 2027 GM Truck engines will make the following power figures.

  • 5.7L V8 with 400 horsepower
  • 6.6L V8 with 475 horsepower

These are significant steps up from the 355 hp 5.3L V8 and the 420 hp 6.2L V8. We still do not have a precise idea about the torque ratings for these new engines, but if the new “Chevy 350” had close to 430 lb-ft, that would be plenty. If the new 6.6L V8 “Chevy 401” has over 515 lb-ft of torque – this would be impressive and close to Ram’s 3.0-liter high-output twin-turbo Hurricane I6 engine.

Larger Fuel Tank?

This information allegedly came from a recent dealership meeting in Las Vegas. The other interesting bits of information include an available new 34-gallon fuel tank. The GM 1500-series trucks currently have either a 24-gallon or a 28-gallon fuel tanks.

On the inside, expect a larger new 16.5-inch screen and available massaging seats on higher end trims. GM continues to invest into the Super Cruise hands-free driving technology. Expect more 2027 Silverado 1500 and 2027 Sierra 1500 trim levels to offer Super Cruise driver assistance technology.

New Heavy-Duty 8.3L “MegaMax” Engine?

There are still rumblings about a new 2028 GM heavy-duty trucks with an updated new engine, but not many details are known yet. Will it be the rumored 8.3L MegaMax turbo-diesel with over 600 horsepower? We do not have any further information about this yet.

It does make sense that we will not see a significant update to the Silverado HD and Sierra HD pickup trucks until the 2028 model year. The HD trucks are usually about one year behind in their update when compared to their light-duty counterparts.
