We’re already getting more insight into a $13 billion investment Stellantis promised into its US manufacturing, including a new Ram SUV.
The Ram family is about to get bigger than we expected just a little while ago. In addition to a new midsize truck finally joining the ranks, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed a new SUV will launch in 2028. The initial reporting on the matter came from Automotive News, who detailed what Filosa told analysts this week.
This revelation comes hot on the heels of the company’s announcement earlier this month. In that statement, Stellantis notes it will infuse a whopping $13 billion into its US manufacturing presence, marking the largest single such investment in the company’s 100-year history (stretching back to Chrysler’s early days). Among the details, the automaker said it would “develop an all-new range-extended EV and internal combustion engine large SUV that will be produced at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant beginning in 2028.”
At the time, it wasn’t clear which brand would get the big SUV treatment, but this puts that piece of the puzzle into sharp focus. We will indeed get a full-size Ram SUV.
So, what can we expect to see in a few years, then?
For the past decade-and-a-half, we’ve lived in a world where Ram split off into its own separate truck and commercial van brand, but the SUVs remained under the Dodge banner. So, when it does arrive in 2028, this SUV will technically be the first SUV to launch under the Ram brand as a standalone entity.
Thanks to the details Stellantis shared a couple weeks ago, we also have a pretty good idea what will power this full-size model. At least, it would make the most sense for the model to share its powertrain options with the Ram 1500, as well as the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. The internal combustion side of that equation may be the 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six, then, while the REEV will almost certainly share its lineage with the Ram 1500 REV and the refreshed Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which is also getting an electrified powertrain in due time.
Ram isn’t stopping there, either. Filosa also noted in his recent remarks that not one, but two new SRT-developed models will further fill out the Ram lineup. Of course, we have a pretty good idea what the first one will be — a resurrected Ram 1500 TRX — though it’s a bit of a mystery what the second one will be. These new Rams will be introduced within the next three months, so at least we don’t have to wait too long for more details. Could we see a V8 land in this new SUV model, instead? It certainly seems to be in the cards, given Stellantis’ ferocious backpedaling toward offering the revered Hemi V8 in pretty much everything (or everything enthusiasts care about, more specifically).
