What the heck is going with Ram trucks? The company is losing market share in a significant way and some of the trucks are piling up at dealerships. We take a close look at what’s going on. Let’s dig in!
2025 Ram HD
Let’s start with some big recent news. Ram recently showed what the updated 2025 Ram heavy-duty trucks look like. They get a front and rear styling updates. These new trucks have many “C” Cummins badges on them, so most of these truck will offer Cummins power plants.
This appears to be a mild update and not an all-new truck. The cab and bed appear the same as before. We do not know what the latest interior will look like, and we still don’t know the engine and transmission specs. This information is coming later. We do not know when.
The heavy-duty pickup truck segment is more competitive than ever before. Ram needs to bring their A-game in order to gain sales.
New Ram 1500 Discounts
Several dealerships in our area are offering steep discounts on brand new 2025 Ram 1500 trucks. We saw total discounts of up to $16,500 on some 2025 Ram Big Horn crew cab 4×4 trucks at one dealership, and $10,500 discounts at another. It’s a sign that many of these new trucks are not selling at their window stickers prices.
No New Ram Power Wagon?
Ram recently announced a special new Lunar Edition appearance package for the 2024 Ram Power Wagon, but the powertrain and capability remain the same.
Five or six years ago the Power Wagon was uniquely positioned in the marketplace as an off-road focused heavy-duty pickup truck. In recent years, the Ford Super Duty Tremor, Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 / Bison, and GMC Sierra HD AT4X AEV edition came on the scene. These are very capable heavy-duty pickups that offer high levels of off-road performance, turbo-diesel engines, and more payload and towing capacity than the current Power Wagon.
What will Ram do to elevate its legendary Power Wagon name plate?
No Midsize or Compact Pickup Truck?
Ram offers full-size, heavy-duty pickup trucks in the United States, as well as a full lineup of large commercial vans. However, Ram does not offer any affordable smaller pickup trucks. Ram has no truck to compete in the midsize segment against the Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger and others. Ram also has no entry to compete against the Ford Maverick or Hyundai Santa Cruz.
The best information we have is that Ram is planning to enter the midsize pickup truck market in the United States in 2027 (or around that time). This is still a long time from now. In the meantime, several new pickup truck companies are entering the market: Rivian and Scout. Rivian and Scout may have smaller and more affordable (electrified) pickup trucks on the market by 2027 as well.
Ram REV and Ramcharger?
Ram has shown us the Ram REV all-electric pickup truck and the Ram 1500 Ramchanger range-extended electric pickup truck a while back. The specs are impressive, but we still do not know pricing and on-sale dates for these electrified machines. The Ram Trucks website currently says that the Ram REV pickup is “coming Q4 of 2024“. However, we have heard no chatter about this production release at this time. Q4 of 2024 starts tomorrow, so Ram does not have much time left in order to introduce this truck.
The Ramcharger is said to be available “in 2025”. This is vague timeframe. It may mean that it comes out in December of 2025 or anytime before that.
If the Ram REV and Ramcharger are delayed may not be a bad thing. This allows Ram to focus on their bread-n-butter Ram 1500 and Ram HD truck rollout.
The new 2025 Ram RHO should be arriving at dealers this fall (within 4-8 weeks). This should be an exciting new truck that will directly challenge the Ford F-150 Raptor and many others.
