Ram is kicking off a year of news with its updated 2025 Ram 1500 pickup truck lineup. This is our opportunity to go hands-on with the newest Ram trucks for the first time. Specifically, the first-ever Ram 1500 Ramcharger EV pickup. Ram is bringing back an old name in an entirely new way. It’s an electric pickup truck that uses a 3.6L Pentastar V6 as a range extender for a total possible driving range of 690 miles (according to Ram estimates). Let’s take a closer look.

Ram Ramcharger

The Ramcharger looks fairly normal at first glance. It has a traditional shape and the latest Ram 1500 style. If you saw it from across the street – you wouldn’t think twice about it. That’s the point. Ram is offering a new powertrain choice, but the functionality of the truck remains mostly the same. Many of the specs are way better than an internal combustion version of the same truck.

The Ramcharger has two electric motors (one in the front and one in the rear). The total maximum power is 662 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque. It’s more power than the new 3.0L H.O. Hurricane I6 twin-turbo engine in the 2025 Ram 1500 that goes on sale in Q1 of 2024. The high-output Hurricane is rated at 540 horsepower.

The Ramcharger will be offered in several trim levels: Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Limited, and Tungsten. The maximum payload capability is listed at just over 2,600 lbs. Maximum tow rating is listed at 14,000 lbs. These numbers are pushing into heavy-duty pickup truck territory. Since the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has been discontinued, no other Ram 1500 pickup can get close to or above 690 miles of total driving range.

The Ramcharger reaches this long driving range by combining a 92 kWh battery with a 28-gallon fuel tank that feeds the 3.6L gas V6 generator. Ram says that the V6 can provide up to 130 kW (or 170-ish horsepower) of charging power. If you are charging the truck at a Level 3 DC fast charger, it can accept up to 145 kW of energy. This is not a very fast charging rate, but this type of truck doesn’t require it (since you can choose to add gasoline to it at any time).

I did not get a chance to peek under the hood or look underneath the new Ramcharger. The truck you see in this video is an early prototype. Ram says that new Ramcharger pickups will go on sale early next year (in 2025). We are still about a year away from customers taking delivery.

Ram says that we should stay tuned to more news that is coming later this year.

  • The company expects to unveil a “sport truck” in April of 2024. We expect this to be the Ram RHO that has a Ram TRX suspension and body that is combined with a new 3.0L H.O. TT I6 that produces 540 horspower.
  • Ram HD news is expected to land “later this year”.
