Ford’s new flagship family SUV will debut in just a week. Here’s what we know so far!
As one of the young whippersnappers on the TFL team, the original Ford Expedition was the SUV most of my friends’ parents picked up to cart their families around in the late ’90s. Fast forward nearly three decades, and Ford is almost ready to launch a brand-new, fifth-generation model. Alongside the new Lincoln Navigator, we’ve been expecting the more mainstream Expedition to make its appearance for months, particularly as spy shots have shown the new model roaming American streets. Thanks to those spy shots, there’s a decent bit we already know, but there’s still plenty more to come on October 3.
Let’s start with what we can make out from the teaser. Right off the bat, the 2025 Ford Expedition gets a totally new look with wrap-around daytime running lights, as well as prominent and upright Expedition badging on the hood. Since this full-size body-on-frame SUV shares a platform with Ford’s F-Series models, the Expedition naturally still has a proper truck-sized grille.
Under the hood, the 2025 Ford Expedition should still pack the familiar 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. As things stand right now, Ford’s largest SUV has three output levels depending on which trim you choose, ranging between 380 and 400 horsepower, and 470 lb-ft to 480 lb-ft of torque. Now, the new Navigator manages 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque from the same engine, so it remains to be seen whether the new Expedition will get a similar level of grunt.
Spy shots have shown a split tailgate this time around (again, much like the Navigator), while we’ve also seen a new Tremor variant that widen the off-road model’s presence across Ford’s entire truck-based lineup. The exact feature set and layout inside the new Expedition is still shrouded in some mystery, though earlier reports show it won’t have the same pillar-to-pillar infotainment screen setup as the more luxury-minded (and more expensive) Lincoln.
Fortunately, if you’re awaiting more details on the 2025 Ford Expedition, you’ll only have to wait a week to find out more. We’ll have the entire story on the new model next Thursday at 8 PM Eastern, so stay tuned.
