Let's go to Moab, Utah.

It’s time to take the all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma to Moab Utah for a proper off-road test against another formidable off-roader – the new 2024 Toyota 4Runner. It’s an old-school V6-powered 4Runner TRD Pro that is hitting the trail along with our Tacoma TRD Off-road. Roman, Tommy, and Nathan compare these two on the Fins-n-Things trail in Utah.

The current 5th-generation of the 4Runner dates back to the 2010 model year that came out in 2009. It has the venerable 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and a 5-speed automatic transmission. The 5th-gen 4Runner has been updated a couple of times over the years. It has many of the driver-assistance technologies that most new vehicle have.

Can the all-new Tacoma TRD Off-Road stand up to this comparison? It has a longer wheelbase and worse clearances than those of the tried and true 4Runner. The guys take these trucks through, up, and down the familiar obstacles: v-notch, frame bender, one tree hill, and butt scratcher.

In the end, the Tacoma TRD Off-Road scrapped in a few more places. The Tacoma’s new driver-side exhaust hangs down and the tail pipe hit a few obstacles. Still, both made through to the end of the trail in one piece.

The 4Runner TRD Pro you see here has a sticker price of $56,565. The base Tacoma TRD Off-Road we bought has a price of $45,300. Both could be configured to cost the same between $40,000-$56,000. The new Tacoma is definitely more efficient and more powerful with its new 2.4-liter turbocharged I4 engine (278 horsepower) that is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

We will have to wait a little longer and see what the all-new 6th-generation Toyota 4Runner will look like.
