Which used heavy-duty pickup truck (Ram HD, Chevy HD, or Ford SD) makes for a great and affordable purchase? Which one is tougher and lasts longer? This is why we went to the Colorado Dealer Auction and found three HD pickup trucks that are less than five years old, but were used in brutal conditions as fleet work trucks.
We are starting our comparison with a 2021 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD crew cab with a new gasoline 6.6L V8 and a 6-speed automatic transmission. This is a 4×4 truck with over 109,000 miles on the odometer. It has beefy off-road tires and lots of leftover mud. It may have been a truck used in the oil/gas field industry or construction sites. This truck’s current market value is just under $40,000.
Next up is a 2019 Ram 2500 HD with a 6.4L gas V8 crew cab and an 8-speed automatic transmission. This 4×4 truck has over 102,000 miles on the clock and it was used by the Denver Airport fleet. It also has a lot of idle engine hours. This truck’s current market value is around $30,000.
Finally, we have a 2018 Ford F-250 extended “Super” cab 4×4 FX4 truck with a 6.2L gas V8 and a 6-speed automatic transmission. This one has more miles (nearly 156,000 miles), and it also may have been used in the oil/gas field industry or construction sites. This truck’s current market value is just north of $25,000.
Brand-new pickup trucks are very expensive these days. We think we found a great alternative. These are much cheaper used heavy-duty pickup trucks. We tested the 4WD systems and all three work. We did not see any check engine lights or warning messages.
