Rivian pulled its initial power tonneau cover after a problematic rollout.
It’s been roughly a year since the company originally told its customers it would have to opt for a manual tonneau cover or go without, after the first powered tonneau gave customers a buggy experience. Now, though, Rivian has a new cover ready for the R1T, and a recent email exchange shared with an owner (and shared to Rivian Forums) confirmed it’s ready to start installations to those with open service tickets for the issue.
Specifically, Rivian says it completed in-field testing of the new unit and it passed durability and repeatability standards. “Our Service Team will begin reaching out to owners with existing service tickets next week,” the email says, “with installations starting later this month. We will be reaching out to schedule appointments on a rolling basis, not all at once.”
What the message does not specify, however, is who will get new powered tonneau covers first, and how quickly it plans to address all the service tickets. Rivian may also prioritize certain camps of owners as well, including those who got the original tonneau cover and those who took the manual tonneau cover instead (or nothing at all). Right now, though, the company is not asking customers with powered covers to take any special action.
