2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD vs. the Outgoing 2023 Model: How These Trucks Compare by the Numbers

This is a complete breakdown of payload, GVWR and towing based on Chevy's spec sheets

2023 vs. 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD

Here’s how the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD compares to the outgoing truck by the numbers.

Beyond simply showing off the updated truck Monday, Chevrolet provided a comprehensive spec sheet. With that wealth of information, we can dive deeper into the numbers and see where the new truck has changed against the previous model. I hesitate to call it the “old truck” just yet since you can still get the pre-facelift trucks brand new, but if you want to call it the old model at this point…who am I to judge?

On that note, you can configure the current old/new truck on Chevrolet’s configurator site. Since GM’s Flint and Oshawa plants started 2023 model year production this summer, it will continue to roll out those trucks until it switches over in a few months.

Before digging in, there are a few numbers we don’t know yet. Pricing on 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD trucks is a big one, so we will not cover that here. When more detailed prices are available, we’ll cover that in a separate post. However, the automaker provided virtually all dimensions including curb weight, payload, trailering capacity and GCWR, so we can look at the differences in the numbers there.

You can skip to whichever figures you’re interested in using the jump links below:

What hasn’t changed for the revamped lineup

As before, you’ll be able to get the Silverado HD in both 2500 HD 3/4-ton and 3500 HD 1-ton variants. Regular Cab, Double Cab and Crew Cab versions are available for each, as are rear- or four-wheel drive configurations. On the 3500 HD, you can (of course) get either the single rear-wheel option or a dually. Two box configurations are available: the 82.25-inch standard bed and the 98.27-inch long bed.

With the possible exception of the ZR2 — again, we don’t have any information other than the fact it’s coming right now — the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD lineup uses the same suspension and chassis setup as before. Up front, you get short long arms (SLA) independent front suspension with torsion bars. At the rear, there are semi-elliptic three-stage multi-leaf springs. Steering is still a hydraulic power-assisted recirculating ball system, with digital variable steering assist featuring on the LTZ and High Country trims.

The braking situation is the same, as well. You get 14-inch (355 millimeter) iron rotors in the front regardless of whether you get the 2500 HD or 3500 HD. The SRW 3500 HD models get slightly larger, 14.1-inch (360 millimeter) rear rotors, while the DRW models get the same 14-inchers as the front.

Available wheel and tire configurations largely mirror the outgoing trucks. Steel wheels are available in either 17 or 18-inch specs for 2500 HD and 3600 HD models, while aluminum wheels ranging between 17 and 20 inches are also an option. Tire sizes range between LT235/80 R17 on the low end, to LT275/65R20 on the higher end, in either all-season or all-terrain form depending on which package(s) you choose.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the old and new (post-refresh) trucks are identical, according to Chevrolet’s spec sheets:

Powertrain changes: 2024 vs. 2023 Chevrolet Silverado HD lineup

While the cab and bed configurations may be consistent between the two model years, there are some differences with the powertrains worth mentioning.

The 6.6-liter gas V-8, for its part, carries over unchanged. It still puts out 401 horsepower @ 5,200 RPM and 464 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM (299 kW/629 N-m). The key difference here, though, is that Chevrolet will pair it up to the 10-speed Allison-branded automatic transmission for 2024. That means you can take advantage of four more ratios against the outgoing 6-speed, much like you could with the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel. As before, the overhead valve, two-valve per cylinder gas engine is a cast iron block with a cast aluminum head, with a 4.06-by-3.86-inch bore and stroke (103.25-by-98 millimeters). The gas engine’s stock compression ratio is 10.8:1.

As for that diesel, you do get more power and torque for the 2024 model year. The 6.6L diesel now puts out 470 horsepower @ 2,800 RPM and 975 lb-ft of torque @ 1,600 RPM (350 kW/1322 N-m) — 25 more hp and 65 lb-ft more than before. Chevrolet engineers said they enhanced low-end torque production by 25%, but the engine still makes peak horsepower and torque at the same points as it did before the performance bump.

The Allison 10L1000 10-speed automatic is standard fare across the entire 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD lineup. While the company did boost the turbodiesel’s output, the transmission gearing remains the same as before. The final drive ratios — 3.73:1 for the 6.6L gas V-8 and 3.42:1 for the 6.6L diesel V-8 — are the same as well.

Correction 9/27/22: The torque number for the diesel was way off thanks to a typo – Apologies for the error. What is showing now (975 lb-ft) is the correct figure.

Curb Weight, Payload, GVWR and Towing values have changed (at least slightly)

The meat of the on-paper changes between the 2023 and 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD trucks comes down to the rated capabilities. GVWR has mostly stayed the same, though some values have decreased on 3500 HD models due to packaging and content changes that also influenced the trucks’ curb weights. Payload capacities have seen a similar shift, with 2024 trucks actually having lower values, by and large, due to added kit like the new displays, extra leather and available wood.

Despite the extra equipment, Chevrolet actually shows the diesel trucks shedding some weight from their 2023 counterparts. How much weight depends on cab configuration and two-wheel drive versus four-wheel drive. On the whole, though, comparing Chevrolet’s spec sheets reveal a weight savings for diesel trucks of anywhere from a negligible amount up to 271 pounds (123 kg). The gasoline-powered trucks, on the other hand, get heavier thanks to the addition of that 10-speed Allison transmission.

Payload capacities

If you looked at the difference in curb weights between the spec sheets, then you more or less know what to expect with payload. On the whole, gas-powered trucks suffered a payload penalty thanks to the addition of a 10-speed transmission. Diesel trucks, on the other hand, may see their payloads increase. Again, it depends on which cab and box configuration we’re talking about.

It’s worth noting that the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD models seem to have suffered a payload reduction pretty much across the board. According to the automaker’s 2024 spec sheet published Monday, 2500 models lose up to 332 pounds off their payload ratings.

However, these numbers are meant for comparative purposes only. If you do end up actually buying a Silverado HD, check the door jamb sticker on your specific truck for the real payload capacity. These figures will change beyond cab configuration, standard versus long bed and powertrain. Factory or dealer-installed equipment added onto the truck will negatively impact its payload capacity.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado

And last but not least…2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD towing capacities

Depending on where you may be cross shopping the old truck versus the new one, you could face a significant change in Chevrolet’s rated towing capability. The SRW 3500 HD with the 6.6L Duramax, for example, gets a 5,500-pound (2,495 kg) improvement, according to Chevrolet’s published spec sheets.

By and large, gas-powered Silverado HD models see a bump in their max tow rating. That’s especially true for 2500 HD models, thanks to the heavier 3500-series springs and shocks that are available through the Max Towing package.

Chevrolet also expanded their trailering capacity breakdown beyond what the company listed for 2022 models. Several Crew Cab ratings now show towing capacity by powertrain and standard/long box configuration, whereas it only broke down by powertrain before. The long bed models, then, get a 1,500-pound 3,400-pound uplift in their max ratings.

Overall, you’ll see either the same trailering capability or an improvement, at least in conventional towing applications. If you plan to tow with a gooseneck hitch or fifth wheel, however, you’ll have to watch out — more on that below.

*For the 2022-2023 model years, Chevrolet’s spec sheet only broke out towing capacities by powertrain. Where marked, the 2024 models show higher capacities for long bed configurations.
**When equipped with a gooseneck hitch. Fifth-wheel rating is 32,000 lbs. / 14,515 kg.

According to the spec sheets, some configurations actually lose some towing capability, such as gas-powered Double Cab models with the standard-length bed. Rear-wheel drive, SRW 3500 HD models with the 6.6L Duramax and standard bed also evidently lost 2,500 pounds off their towing capacity. Similarly specified 2022-2023 models are rated to tow 21,500 pounds (9,752 kg), while the new 2024 variant is only rated for 19,000 pounds (8,618 kg).

We created all these charts on the basis that the spec sheets linked below are accurate at time of publishing. However, if Chevrolet notes any inaccuracies or changes, we’ll do our best to come back here and update the tables accordingly.
