We recently got this question about getting a 4×4 pickup truck for under $20,000.
I’m deployed overseas and will be back in Colorado sometime later in 2018. I have been looking for a truck (currently own a 98 Camry that I love to death) and want to get the best bang for my buck. We have a program called military auto source, that gets you into a new dodge or ford for a good discount but a ram express or f150 with similar build is still 35k. I really don’t need a full size but the Tacoma (top of my list) used is still a pretty penny and many full size trucks get the same MPG. With a budget of $20k what in your professional opinion is the best, quality, value, and long term ownership. I need 4×4 and room for an eventual family. Thanks again and keep up the great work. I always look forward to reading and seeing what’s next!

Jarred, we thank you for your service to our country.

If you have a $20K budget for a 4×4 pickup truck that can potentially hold a small family, then you have to look to the used truck market. One truck come to mind that can satisfy a lot of your requirements for long-term ownership. A used Toyota Tundra extended (Double) cab 4×4 may be a choice for you because it’s not a huge truck, but still has four forward opening doors and good interior room. It has a reputation for reliability, but not for fuel efficiency.
Naturally, shopping on the used market comes with its own lineup of concerns. If you get the truck checked out by a professional mechanic before you buy it – it will help you purchase a good example. A 2011-2012 Tundra double cabs go for around $20,000 in the Denver area now.
