2014 Ford Raptor Long-Term Update: What Broke and What Didn’t

2014-Ford-Raptor

TFL’s resident shop truck – a 2014 Ford Raptor – has been with us for 36k miles now (36,665 to be exact) so it’s time to give an update on what’s been going on, including maintenance items, tires, and aftermarket accessories.

The stock BFGoodrichAll-Terrain T/A tires have been rotated regularly and after a healthy dose of off-roading they still have some life left in them, although it may be time to start budgeting for a new set. The aftermarket Smittybilt winch we installed has saved us on several occasions but it has not held up as well as the tires have. The mounting bracket is covered in rust and the controller module broke off. Nothing a little duct tape and a zip tie can’t fix… at least for the meantime. We have not yet reached out to the company about the issues.

Another aftermarket add-on is a BAK Industries Roll-X folding and locking tonneau cover. The cover is low-profile and overall we’re happy with the choice. Although the tonneau cover has a locking mechanism, it is merely a deterrent. I was able to unlock the cover while the tailgate was up using just two coat hangers slipped in between the tailgate and the tonneau cover (see pictures below). The entire process took less than a minute.

Routine Maintenance and Warranty Items

The truck has visited the local Ford dealership for three scheduled services including the usual oil and filter changes, tire rotations, etc. The total for these visits came to $208.03, including $19.95 for a set of new wiper blades at around 20k miles.

The steering wheel lost its telescoping abilities near the 25k-mile mark due to a malfunctioning motor. Ford replaced it and covered the tab of $505.51. The second warranty item was a fault in the trailer brake module. Replacement cost for a new module was $263.66

All in all, the Raptor has served its duties well as a shop-truck and has been the hero in several “Raptor Rescue” videos like the one below.
