For those who prefer to take their new trucks straight from the dealership to the trails, Toyota has brought back the Tacoma TRD Pro for the 2017 model year. Based on the third generation Tacoma, the new TRD Pro carries the same 3.5L V6 engine rated at 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, but with a host of performance and appearance enhancements.

Passersby will most easily be able to distinguish the TRD Pro over the TRD Off-Road by its 16″ black TRD wheels, each offset 0.5 inches, old school TOYOTA front grille, blacked-out hood scoop (assumed to be non-functional), color-keyed body parts, and all the TRD Pro badges you might expect. Tires will come in the form of Goodyear Wrangler Kevlar-reinforced all-terrains. On the inside, the top-of-the-line Tacoma gets leather-trimmed heated front seats with logos in the headrests, a TRD shift knob, and TRD floormats.

In addition to all the electronic off-road goodies found on the TRD Off-Road such as hill start assist, crawl control, and traction control, suspension hardware for the truck includes:

– FOX 2.5 Internal Bypass Coil-overs with TRD coil springs in the front providing a 1-inch lift

– FOX 2.5 Internal Bypass Shocks with TRD Off-Road spec leaf springs in the rear

– 2.5-inch diameter aluminum bodies

– FOX patented Internal Bypass technology

– Position-sensitive Damping

– Internal Floating Pistons (IFP)

All TRD Pro models will be equipped with a tow package and will be available in three colors: Barcelona Red Metallic, Super White, and the TRD Pro-exclusive, Cement. Piece of mind comes via the same 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty (60-month/60,000-mile powertrain) found on all Toyotas, along with the company’s 2-year/25,000-mile Toyota Care factory-scheduled maintenance program. Pricing and release date have yet to be announced but shoppers should expect to plunk down a few grand more than they would for a TRD Off-Road.
