The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Trail Boss – Up Close Glimpse

Recently, TFLtruck was invited to have a look at the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Trail Boss at the 2015 Colorado State Fair in Pueblo, CO. Given the interest around this off-road-ish update to the popular Chevy Colorado, we jumped at the chance. Despite the fact that the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Trail Boss was on static display, it gave us a good look at the accessories GM was touting:

“The 2016 Colorado Z71 Trail Boss builds on the capability of Chevrolet’s Z71 off-road truck suspension package with more aggressive tires and off-road-inspired appearance enhancements.

An all-new sport bar with LED trail lighting makes the new edition of the Trail Boss instantly identifiable. It’s complemented by black-finished 17-inch aluminum wheels matched with aggressive Goodyear Wrangler DuraTec® 265/65R17 all-terrain tires, bold fender flares and tubular assist steps. It also features a black bowtie grille emblem and a spray-on bedliner, and a set of all-weather floor mats inside the truck.

The Colorado Z71 Trail Boss is available on Z71 models with the extended and crew cab bodies, and in 2WD or 4WD. Like the Midnight Edition, it will also be available with the 2.5L and 3.6L engines, as well as the 2.8L Duramax diesel. Pricing will be announced later.” – – GM Media

What the photos and PR don’t tell you:

  • The front aero skirt compromises the approach angle and appears to be difficult to remove. There are no grommets, snaps or simple releases the allow easy removal of the aero skirt.
  • Image-1

  • The light bar is beefy and feels strong enough to handle some abuse. The upper section of the bar, where the LED lights are set, has plenty of room for additional lights.
  • Image-1

  • The 17-inch, black painted wheels are strikingly similar to the ones on the Chevrolet Silverado Midnight Edition. It’s difficult to estimate how scratch-resistant these wheels will be.
  • The tubular side-steps do not look like they double as rock rails.
  • The Goodyear Wrangler DuraTec M&S 265/65R17 tires look substantial.
  • There is a lot of room for upgrades and customization, or General Motors could save us a lot of trouble and build the ZR2.

2016 Colorado Z71 Trail Boss will be available this spring, the package price is $3,320.
