King of the trucks, Russia’s KAMAZ #506 wins the 2014 Dakar!

20
Russian driver, Andrey Karginov piloted the (#506)KAMAZ 4326-9 Dakar with navigator, Andrey Mokeev and his mechanic Igor Devyatkin to victory at the 2014 Dakar rally. KAMAZ had several trucks finish in the top ten with IVECO being the only other truck to podium (driver Nikolaev) in second place. KAMAZ took first and third.

Once again, Russia has shown their power in the truck class by dominating the standings with trucks and drivers.

Sourced from the Dakar website, check out these tidbits about the winning drive Andrey Karginov:

MOTORSPORT - DAKAR 2014 FINISH
Andrey Karginov was born in the family of one of the founders and promoters of buggy races in Naberezhnye Chelny. At the age of 9 he started carting, becoming several times champion of Tatarstan. Andrey had a practical training in the KAMAZ research and development centre. So when there was the opportunity to join the team in 2005, it was taken with sincere enthusiasm. In 2006 the young athlete took part as a mechanic in the different stages of the Russian Championship in the same crew as team veterans such as Vladimir Chagin. He competed in his first Dakar in 2010 as the mechanic of Ilgizar Mardeev, finishing on the second step of the podium. Two years later, it was his turn to drive and he did so in style, finishing 4th and capturing 2 stage wins. He went one step higher last year, capturing three stage wins and taking his truck to the podium of the Dakar and completing a splendid Kamaz treble. With the same navigator, Andrey Mokeev and his mechanic Igor Devyatkin, Karginov will again be in contention for a first victory.

A.K.: “I felt emptiness after the finish of the Dakar 2013: “Well, that’s it.” All year we prepared to the Dakar, we counted days, and then it was suddenly all over. The cabin was silent; I looked at the guys who were astonished. Everyone had their own thoughts. Then we arrived at the park fermé, people greeted us, congratulated us and only at that moment you began to understand that all the dramatic twists and turns of the race had become history”.
A.M.: “One of the stages of last year’s Dakar was very funny. We were going fast, the route was bumpy and at one moment, one side of our truck opened. As you know only the most vital parts are in the cargo body: two spare wheels, a fuel tank, two boxes with some parts, and our equipment of course. We quickly stopped to pick all this up, but we didn’t find my bag with my equipment. It happened four days before the finish podium. And in Santiago, at the finish a representative of a German team gave me my bag back. We actually left our mark in history; a shot with the opened side of the cargo body was broadcasted on TV. Our fans wrote that we did so well because we had an open wing. It seems to me that we have to open both sides this time”.

We went out all guns blazing this morning, but the special was very tough, with lots of dust and big rocks which made the course very tricky. We spent most of the day in front, but we had a puncture in the second part of the special and we lost some time changing the tyre, so De Rooy overtook us and it was already too late to catch up with him.
