New Ford Maverick and F-150 Recalls Impact Combined 160,000 Trucks

(Images: Ford)

Ford issued new recall campaigns for its compact Maverick and half-ton F-150 trucks.

As of this week, owners will want to keep their eyes out for manufacturer letters about recalls impacting two of Ford’s most popular models. The larger of the two campaigns addresses a software issue affecting rear camera functionality on 2022-2024 Mavericks, while the smaller recall only affects parking lamps on F-150s built for the 2022 model year.

A notification Ford sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents the potential for the Maverick’s rear-view camera display to freeze up while the vehicle is in reverse. In all, Ford says the problem affects 144,516 units built between February 3, 2021 and November 28, 2023. These trucks have Ford’s “Connected Touch Radios” (CTR) software installed. Specifically, the automaker says, “An improper memory handling within [the] CTR software is causing a component in the end-to-end rear-view camera image processing path to fail.”

That sort of failure may result in a false representation of where the truck actually is relative to its surroundings, increasing the risk of a crash. The NHTSA initially contacted Ford about the alleged issue back in June, after customers filed complaints with the agency about their camera images freezing while vehicles were in reverse. Four Vehicle Owner’s Questionnaires (VOQs) were forward to Ford associated with the concern. Ford’s own investigation identified an additional 26 claims on 2022-2024 Maverick models.

Between September 30 and October 4, 2024, Ford will notify impacted Maverick owners about the problem. It notified dealers on September 16.

Fortunately, the issue is fixable with a software update. Several revisions of the Connected Touch Radio software will be updated with the latest version, patching the memory leak that causes the rear-view camera image to freeze in the first place. To-date, Ford says it is aware of two accidents possibly related to the problem, but no injuries or fatalities.

The F-150 recall addresses flicking parking lights.

Ford’s second recall addresses a specific issue with the 2022 F-150. The problem affects a substantially smaller number of trucks — just 16,543 — which is fairly minor given the truck’s immense popularity that continues with the fourteenth-generation models.

In reviewing repair records and over-the-air deployment records, Ford narrowed down an issue where the parking lamps may flicker in a few different scenarios after it attempted to update the trucks’ Body Control Module (BCM) software to address the same root issue in 2022 (22C22/22V-686). Ford says the problem could crop up when the customer selects the “Position Lamp On” mode; when they select “Headlamp On” mode; or when they are driving at night in “Automatic” mode, where the ambient light is low enough to trigger the parking lamp and headlight functions.

Technically, parking light flickering knocks these particular F-150 trucks out of compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, which dictate the lights must be “steady burning” for safety. Flickering or completely inoperable lights could increase the risk of an accident.

Ford says it is aware of 368 reports related to flickering parking lights, dating as far back as April 18 of this year. It is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the problem.

This time, Ford will notify owners by mail between October 7 and October 11 to bring their trucks into the dealer, where technicians will replace the LED driver module with a new unit (with updated software), at no charge. The new module contains software that bumps up the LED parking lamps’ frequency to 400Hz, rather than 200Hz. That reduces the capacitance (or the amount of charge that can be stored at a given voltage on a capacitor, in this case between 2.95 and 3.14 volts) needed for the lamp to operate. At 200Hz, the capacitance was insufficient, which causes flickering.

Video: Refreshed 2025 Nissan Frontier Is Here! Which One Should You Buy?

2025 nissan frontier pro-4x buyer's guide long bed towing toyota tacoma ford ranger

The wait is over, the refreshed and updated 2025 Nissan Frontier pickup trucks are arriving in dealerships right now. What are all the updates? Are they worth it? Is the new Frontier more competitive than ever before? Which new Nissan Frontier should you buy? How does Frontier pricing and features compare to all of the other midsize pickup trucks? Let’s dig in!

Style & Base Truck

First up, Nissan updates the styling of the Frontier in the front and the rear. It’s a mild update and you may not notice it right away. In fact, you may have to look at the 2025 truck side-by-side with the outgoing one to see all of the changes. What stands out the most are the three indents in the top of the grille that harken back to the Nissan Hardbody trucks.

2025 Nissan Frontier S – base model

If you are looking for the lowest price and best value, you can look at the 2025 Frontier S King Cab 2WD. This is their base work truck. It has a starting price of $33,560 after you add the $1,510 destination charge. The good news is that the only engine is the powerful 3.8L non-turbocharged V6 with 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque, which is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. However, you need to consider that the base work truck will have no bed liner, wired-only Apple Carplay or Android Auto, and a smaller 8-inch center infotainment screen. If you want wireless CarPlay or a bigger screen, you will have to step up to more expensive versions of the Frontier.

V6 Power!

Yes, all Nissan Frontier trucks use the same powertrain. The 3.8L “VQ38” V6 engine was first introduced for sale in March of 2020 in the previous generation Frontier. It is still basically the same engine, although it may have some tweaks done to it in order to comply with the ever-changing government emissions regulations. The power out out is 310 hp @ 6,400 rpm and 281 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm. It has a 6,600 rpm redline. Indeed, it does not have any turbochargers attached to it. It’s mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 3.69-to-1 rear axle ratio.

The recent industry trend is to downsize engines and add turbos. Some are adding electric hybrid systems to their engines (such as the new Toyota Tacoma Hybrid). The benefit or small turbocharged engines are a lot of low-end torque, less of a need to downshift, and better fuel economy at highway speeds. This is according to our Denver 100 MPG loop testing.

If you prefer a more traditional V6, you will have to rev this V6 engine higher in order to make full power. Currently, Jeep, Honda, and Nissan are the only companies that are selling V6-powered midsize pickup trucks in the U.S. Toyota, GM, and Ford switched to smaller four-cylinder turbocharged engines.

More Capability?

The new 2025 Nissan Frontier has a maximum payload rating of 1,480 lbs and a maximum towing rating of 7,150 lbs. These are not class-leading numbers, but they are good and respectable. Nissan increased the towing capacity of the Frontier by over 500 lbs to reach the new 7,150 lbs level. If you are buying a Frontier PRO-4X, your truck’s payload will be closer to 1,200 lbs. This is also a good and competitive number if you compare it directly to the best-selling Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road.

They had to increase their towing ability, because the full-size Nissan Titan and Titan XD trucks are not discontinued. The only Nissan vehicle that can tow more than this is the all-new 2025 Nissan Armada. It has a tow rating of 8,500 lbs.

Interior

Nissan updated Frontier’s interior and it is most evident with the upper trims, such as this PRO-4X interior you see here. There is a new prominent 12.3-inch center infotainment screen. Don’t worry, many of the knobs, switches, and buttons are still here. The 4×4 system knob, the HVAC controls, the heated seats, and the rear locking differential (if equipped) are controlled via traditional switches.

Competition?

Let’s take a look at most of the competitors to the new 2025 Nissan Frontier. Let’s start with base “work” trucks first.

Starting Price (including Dest.)Built In
2025 Nissan Frontier King Cab S 2WD$33,560Canton, Mississippi
’24 Toyota Tacoma Xtra Cab SR 2WD$32,995Mexico (2 plants)

’24 Jeep Gladiator Crew Cab Sport* 4×4$39,790Toledo, Ohio
’25 Honda Ridgeline Crew Cab Sport AWD$41,545Lincoln, Alabama
* Jeep is discontinuing the Manual Transmission for 2025

As you can see, the Chevy Colorado WT crew cab has the lowest starting price and it comes with a turbocharged 2.7L I4 engine and no cruise control. The Nissan Frontier King Cab (extended cab) is not the most affordable, but it is the lowest priced V6 and the most powerful midsize work truck you can buy.

Now, let’s take a look at the top of the line off-road midsize truck comparison.

Sticker Price (including Dest.)Reason to Buy
2025 Frontier PRO-4X Long Bed$51,600Value
2024 Tacoma Trailhunter Long Bed$64,895Hybrid power

The new Nissan Frontier PRO-4X and the Honda Ridgeline TrailSport quickly become more attractive because of lower prices relative to competition. I listed my reasons to buy at the top. This is just the top reason that comes to mind. Naturally, there is more neuance to it. This is why you should watch the video below and stay tuned to TFLtruck.com and our TFLtruck Youtube channel for many more real-world pickup truck tests.

GM Recalls 450,000 Half-Ton Trucks, Full-Size SUVs That Don’t Warn Drivers of Low Brake Fluid Issue

A fault with GM’s electronic brake control module software fails to display a warning when brake fluid is low.

General Motors just issued a new recall covering nearly half a million trucks and SUVs over an issue that may prevent drivers from learning of a loss of brake fluid before it degrades braking performance, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. The recall campaign covers 449,671 vehicles according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report. It includes 2023-2024 examples of the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, as well as the full-size Chevrolet Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade and their long-wheelbase variants, like the Suburban, Yukon XL and Escalade ESV.

Specifically, the recall report says that “in the event of a brake fluid leak, the vehicle’s brake pedal performance may degrade before the BRAKE telltale [light] timely illuminates [in accordance with federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards], increasing the risk of a crash.” GM says the problem is caused by a version mismatch between the electronic brake control module software and the calibrations released to vehicle assembly plants.

A GM engineer noticed the issue during a forced brake fluid leak test, and submitted the concern through GM’s internal safety program in April, after noticing the existing calibrations did not cause the low brake fluid light to illuminate, even under controlled conditions like forcing a loss of fluid.

What’s the fix?

Since we are just talking about a software issue rather than a mechanical fault, the fix is pretty straightforward. GM will roll out updated electronic brake control module software to correct the conflict with the old calibration. For vehicles that can receive over-the-air updates and have accepted the terms to get those updates, owners shouldn’t have to visit the dealer at all. Otherwise, you’ll be able to sort the issue out at your dealership.

Most if not all 2023 and 2024 models impacted by this recall should still be under warranty, so GM is not offering reimbursement for repairs.

GM informed its dealers of the problem on September 12, and will notify owners by mail on October 28, 2024. Owners can check the NHTSA recall website (or their vehicle’s brand recall site) for more information. The reference number you’re looking for is either 24-V74 (NHTSA recall number) or GM’s recall number, N242447990.

Video: Is My Dream Heavy-Duty Truck a Ford, Chevy or Ram? Let Me Show You!

2024 ford f-350 king ranch diesel truck power stroke chevy ram hd

I want to show you my dream new heavy-duty pickup truck. This truck must do it all and do it very well. It’s a brand-new 2024 Ford F-350 King Ranch Tremor crew cab 4×4. This truck is equipped with a 6.7L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V8. Here is why it’s my favorite truck in the heavy-duty segment. Let’s dig in!

Configuration

This is a crew cab truck with a 6.75-foot bed. It has more than plenty of space for five people in the cab, and the bed is long enough to carry everything I want or tow a large gooseneck or 5th-wheel camping trailer. It is a one-ton F-350 truck with a single rear wheel. Let’s discuss the ride comfort a little later. This is an ideal configuration for what I need. I would not buy a heavy-duty pickup with a long 8-foot bed or dually rear wheels. I do not need a truck that big, and I do not want to tow a trailer that is large enough to require a dually.

Power

This is the most powerful pickup truck from the factory at this time. The high-output diesel engine in this truck is rated at 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Is this power really meaningful in the real world? Yes! We have drag raced several Super Duty trucks with this engine against GM and Ram heavy duties. This diesel wins the 1/4-mile test.

Drag racing is just for fun, but we also put this engine on the Ike GauntletTM – the world’s toughest towing test against a new Chevy Silverado 3500 Duramax V8. We pulled a 27,000 lbs gooseneck trailer during our last test. The H.O. Power Stroke helped a F-350 dually keep its title of the heavy-weight towing champion.

Capability

This F-350 crew cab King Ranch 4×4 Tremor truck has a maximum payload rating of just over 3,700 lbs and a maximum towing rating of 23,000 lbs.

While GM and Ram offer special off-road trims of their heavy-duty pickup trucks, they are offered only in their 2500 series trucks. I am referring to the Silverado HD 2500 ZR2, GMC Sierra HD 2500 AT4X, the Ram HD 2500 Rebel, and the Ram 2500 Power Wagon. Ford offers the Tremor as an additional package on several trim levels of the F-250 and F-350 trucks.

Off-Road Capability

This is an F-350 4×4 truck with the Tremor off-road package. Naturally, a heavy-duty pickup truck that weighs over 8,200 lbs just by itself is not an ideal choice for a weekend off-roader. However, my dream truck needs to do everything well. Going on an occasional off-road excursion is something I love doing.

The Tremor package offers a slightly higher ride height than a standard 4×4, 35-inch Goodyear Duratrac tires, rear locking differential, skid plates, unique suspension tuning, trail turn assist, and rock crawl mode. This particular truck also has an optional winch integrated into the front bumper. This winch is an expensive option, but it’s certified by Ford Performance. It passes crash and safety certification as well. It’s a dealer-installed option.

In the end, a Super Duty Tremor can tackle some difficult terrain, if the trail is not too narrow.

Comfort & Technology

This is a luxury truck with a Western design theme. It has maximum recline seat with heat, cooling, and massage. It has an adaptive cruise system with lane keep (but Super Duty trucks do not offer Blue Cruise hands-free driving, at least yet). It has on-board scales that let you know how much weight is in the truck, and it will help you back up a big trailer (if you need it to).

In the end, this truck offers everything I am looking for in a great HD pickup. However, it comes at a price. The truck you see here has a listed MSRP of $105,210.

Join me in the video below for a detailed look at this truck.

Video: Old vs New Ram Cummins Tug Of War – Is Newer Really Better?

1994 doge ram 2500 cummins 2022 hd turbo diesel

In this TFLclassics video episode, Tommy and Kase dig into this “Old versus New” question. Which truck do they like the most, is it a 1994 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5.9L Cummins turbo-diesel or is it a new 2022 Ram 2500 crew cab with a 6.7L Cummins I6? They put them through a series of tests to see what happens. Let’s dig in!

Tug Of War

We like to have fun, so the first test is an old-fashioned tug-of-war.

The 1994 Dodge Ram 4×4 belongs to Kase. He gave the truck a simple suspension lift, 35-inch tires, and several performance upgrades to the 5.9L I6 Cummins diesel. He is putting the power down via a 5-speed manual transmission. This regular two-door cab truck weighs around 6,000 lbs the way you see it here.

The new truck is our TFLstudios 2002 Ram HD 2500 4×4 long-term project truck we call TrailHound. TrailHound has a BDS suspension lift with high performance adjustable FOX dampers. It’s rolling on 37-inch tires. It has massive AEV Prospector front and rear bumpers and a 16.5K Warn winch up front. This truck’s powertrain is all stock. The 6.7L Cummins still produces 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque. It puts the power down via Ram’s 6-speed 68RFE automatic transmission. The TrailHouse weighs just over 8,800 lbs. It a lot heavier than that old truck.

It’s not a big surprise that the heavier truck won this tug-of-war. What’s next?

Drag Race

Kase and I drag raced these identical trucks several weeks ago at the TFL air strip in Northern Colorado. The new truck accelerates much better than the old manual transmission, but there was a surprise at the end. Kase catches up and beats the new Ram at the very end of the 1/4-mile track. Whoa!

Daily Driving

What are these trucks like to daily drive? Well, you will have to watch the video to find out.

What do the guys think after driving testing and driving these two trucks back to back? Take a look at the video below to find out.
