[Updated] This ’81 Toyota Dually Could be the Perfect Summer Road Tripper

1981-Toyota-Dually-Pickup

This rare and seemingly well taken care of 1981 custom Toyota dually 5th wheel popped up on ebay and quickly got the attention of some of the TFL staff (see the original posting and videos of the vehicle here). The truck is described as a Sunrader RWD Extended Cab dually 5th wheel hauler with 21,599 original miles. It’s powered by Toyota’s 22R engine that was in use from 1981 to 1990. Power output from the carbureted 2.4L 4-cylinder is a modest 97 horsepower @ 4,800 rpm and 129 lb-ft of torque at 2,800 rpm. Even with its 5-speed manual, it’s not likely this truck will be running an Ike Gauntlet without some serious upgrades to its powertrain.

According to the owner, the vehicle is rust free and runs like new. The interior looks to be in great condition and the second row bench seat would be the perfect place to watch the miles drift by during a summer road trip. Just think of the view from behind those enlarged rear windows. Styling like this doesn’t exist on new trucks so we’re glad this rolling time capsule has survived in as good of condition as it has. The TFL Raptor has served its purpose well but maybe it’s time for a new TFL shop truck… could this be it? I think I’ll go try and convince Roman.

[Update: this truck and trailer sold for $19,100.]

If nostalgia is not your thing and you’re looking for a modern dually with a bit more towing capacity, check out video of this Ram 3500 that has 900 lb-ft of torque and is able to tow 30,000 lbs.
