AM General is showing a whole new military vehicle. It’s the Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) that looks like a futuristic HUMVEE that drives itself. It can also be operated remotely. It’s being shown at the AUSA Global Force conference this week. Here’s everything we know. Let’s dig in.

The UGV is about the same size as a HUMVEE. The AM General shows several renderings of this vehicle configured as a cargo carrier with a crane, as a MEDEVAC ambulance, as a remote power station, and being able to drive in unmanned convoys.

Under the hood is a 6.5L turbo-diesel V8 or a compression ignition engine. It’s not the archaic power plant you may remember. This one is equipped with a high pressure common rail direct injection system, a variable geometry turbocharger, and an air-to-air intercooler. It can run on JP-8, F-24, or diesel fuels. AM General says this engine is rated at 250 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque.

To aid with navigation and environment assessment, the UGV is equipped with 360-degree thermal cameras. It has a remote operator interface. The cargo version is said to accommodate up to four 40-inch by 48-inch pallets. This translates to approximately 8 feet of cargo bed length.

It’s currently unclear when or if these UGVs will be deployed.

Yes, it appears that future versions of the HUMVEE are still being developed. We do not have information about when new versions of the HUMVEE will be deployed.
