Meet ‘General Giant’, the new addition to our truck fleet. It’s a 1992 AM General M35A3 military truck that has been refreshed by our friends at Boyce Equipment. Roman and I take it to our favorite place – Moab, Utah. This is our first off-road shakedown. Let’s see what it’s like to drive off-road!

This truck started its life as a 6×6 two and a half ton military truck, aka. “Deuce and a Half”. The team at Boyce Equipment chop off part of the rear frame and turn it into a giant 4×4 pickup truck. The smallish military tires are replaced by large 46-inch all-terrain tires.

Under the hood is a military-spec 6.6L Caterpillar I6 turbo-diesel engine. It has a rating of 170 horsepower at 2,700 rpm. The military did not provide a torque rating for this engine. It’s mated to a 4-speed Allison automatic transmission. You may also find a similar transmission in an old school bus or dump truck.

The truck has massive Rockwell 2.5-tonne axles, and Boyce installed an air actuated locking rear differential.

Let’s run it up and down the Baby Lion’s Back trail in Moab, Utah. Please join us in the video below.
