Ford had a successful month in August 2024. The Ford F-Series, Ford Ranger, and Ford Maverick pickup trucks all had significant sales gains. Much of the success was due to gas/electric hybrids and some electric commercial vehicles. Let’s dig in!
Compact Pickup Trucks
August 2024 | August 2023 | % Change
Ford Maverick | 10,269 | 8,299 | +23.7% |
Hyundai Santa Cruz | 2,486 | 3,079 | -11% |
Ford is still on pace to sell close to 150,000 Ford Maverick compact pickups in the United States in 2024. This number may be a bit lower because Ford’s Hermosillo Mexico factory is switching over to produce the refreshed 2025 Maverick pickup trucks. It’s not an all-new generation, so the disruption may not be that big.
The Hyundai Santa Cruz is also going through a 2025 refresh changeover, but this compact pickup is still struggling to gain market share. Santa Cruz sales shrunk by about -11% for the year.
Ford Ranger & F-Series
Let’s take a look at the Ford Ranger and the Ford F-Series trucks. Other manufacturers have not reported August 2024 sales, so we cannot compare Ford’s results to their competitors.
The redesigned 2024 Ford Ranger is shipping in numbers and it shows. The Ranger still has a long way to go to catch up with the Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado sales numbers, but this is looking very good.
The Ford F-Series (including the F-150, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, and F-600 trucks) sales grew by +11.7%, which is significant. This is the first month in a long time that Ford sold over 70,000 F-Series in one month.
The all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning had a great month. Ford is on tract to sell around 30,000 F-150 EVs this year. For contrast, over the first eight months of this year Ford sold 47,477 F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid pickup trucks.
August 2024 | August 2023 | % Change
Ford Ranger | 5,660 | 2,069 | +173.6% |
Ford F-Series | 70,701 | 63,287 | +11.7% |
— F-150 Lightning | — 2,654 | 1,018 | +160.7% |
Ford Transit
Ford’s full-size van market is healthy overall. Ford build on their E-Transit commercial van success with several meaningful upgrades. The latest 2024 E-Transit can be had with an extended range 89 kWh battery that results in a 159 mile driving range, according to Ford. The latest E-Transit is equipped with a 2.4 kW inverter that can now operate while moving.
Ford has sold 104,451 Transit vans over the first eight months of 2024.
August 2024 | August 2023 | % Change
Ford Transit | 10,652 | 11,641 | -8.5% |
— E-Transit | — 949 | 889 | +6.7% |
