Did You Know Cummins Makes a 14.3L Four-Cylinder Diesel Engine That Makes 1,000 Horsepower?

There is a catch.

cummins 14.3L four cylinder diesel engine military two stroke supercharged

Take a look at this engine! It’s a 4-cylinder engine diesel engine with 14.3 liters of displacement by Cummins. It’s an opposing-piston two-stroke engine with turbochargers and superchargers, and it makes monstrous torque and power. Before you ask if you can have this engine in your next Ram pickup truck, consider that it is part of the ACE (Advanced Combat Engine) program. This engine is not for highway use, but it is still very cool and impressive. Here are the details. Let’s dig in!

This engine can be used in combat vehicles where space is at a premium but high power and efficiency are required. This huge displacement four-cylinder engine has eight opposing pistons. However it will fit in a space that is about 48 inch x 43 inch x 23 inch – the size of a coffee table. It’s power dense, but it runs cooler and more efficient than some other engines in its category. This engine is also pretty heavy. The dry weight is listed at 3,571 lbs, it’s about the same weight as a new Toyota Camry.

The engine can produce up to 1,000 horsepower and 2,424 lb-ft of torque, so it can move heavy vehicles without much problem.

Old-school Detroit diesel engines used a two-stroke design, but these were outlawed a long time ago due to their exhaust emissions. Will we see any opposing-piston two-stroke engines in commercial semi trucks? It’s unlikely, but it’s interesting to think about.
