It’s finally time! We get up close and personal with the all-new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV WT (aka. “Work Truck”) and take it for a spin. This is a 4WT model, which means that it has the largest available battery for a 2024 model and as well as many convenience features: stylish wheels, running boards, spray-in bedliner, and more. Join us for this first drive review!
2024 Chevy Silverado EV WT
This new pickup rides on a bespoke version of GM’s new Ultium architecture. It’s related to the GMC Hummer EV, but the Silverado EV is longer and narrower than the Hummer EV truck. However, it does pack the same 24 battery modules into its overall pack. The wheelbase is just over 145 inches in length – which makes it much like a traditional ICE crew cab pickup truck.
It’s a dual-motor setup. One electric motor is in the front, and the other one is in the back. It makes this pickup all-wheel-drive. The work truck version packs a total of 510 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque. However, Chevrolet says that the “Tow/Haul” driving mode may add just a little more output and a more aggressive accelerator pedal mapping.
The Silverado EV WT has a maximum of just over 1,400 lbs of payload capacity and a maximum trailer towing rating of 10,000 lbs. The trailer rating is competitive when you look at the Ford F-150 Lightning Pro and the Rivian R1T electric pickups. However, the payload rating left me desiring more. Most traditional full-size work trucks have a payload that is greater than that. My 2023 Chevy Colorado 4×4 midsize pickup truck has a payload rating of 1,500 lbs.
Why is the payload so low? One of the reasons is that Chevrolet set the GVWR for the 4WT truck at 9,990 lbs. This makes it a Class 2b pickup truck, which is in the same class as the Ford F-250, Silverado HD 2500, and Ram HD 2500. The GVWR of 9,990 lbs is just under 10K lbs which means you do not need a CDL to drive one of these if you are driving them for work.
The large battery is very large and heavy. If it’s the same as in the Hummer EV, then the battery may weigh around 3,100 lbs – which is about the weight of a basic Honda Civic.
Here is how the new 2024 Silverado EV WT compares to the fanciest version that will be available for sale a little later this year – Silverado EV RST First Edition.

Also, check out our first drive of the Silverado EV WT right here. The new Silverado EV WT is very easy to drive. It has a great turning radius, even without the optional four-wheel steering. The four-corner independent coil suspension is dialed in just right. It’s confident and comfortable even with a heavy trailer behind it.
We have a Silverado EV first towing review coming very soon. Please stay tuned to that.
