It's more than just a suspension lift and special trim.

The already popular Ford Maverick lineup is expending for 2023 with an addition of the Tremor trim level. It follows the same formula as the Ford Super Duty Tremor, Ranger Tremor, and the F-150 Tremor before it. The Maverick Tremor is now the most off-road-focused compact crossover pickup in the lineup. The 2023 Maverick Tremor package costs $2,995, but is it worth it? I go to Michigan to compare it to a Maverick FX4 package and find out first-hand.

2023 Ford Maverick Tremor

The Tremor differentiates itself from all other Maverick AWD models with a one-inch suspension lift front and rear. It also has specially tuned springs and shocks that prioritize rough terrain and rough road compliance over maximum payload and trailer towing capability. The suspension lift is combined with a Tremor front fascia that dramatically improves the front approach angle. The front angle improves from 21.6 degrees to 30.8 degrees. This is obvious when you put the new Tremor right next to the Maverick with the FX4 package.  The departure and breakover angles are also improved. So is the ground clearance. Take a look at the table below to a direct comparison.

The Maverick Tremor is more than just a suspension kit. Ford gave it all the robust 4WD hardware that’s also available on the Ford Bronco Sport with the Badlands package. It includes the repackage front radiator, water-cooled AWD (aka. the Power Take Off PTO) unit with a selectable front-to-rear power split locking feature, and a dual-clutch driver-selectable rear locking differential. All this gear as well as the Falken Wildpeak AT tires should offer superior traction over most surfaces. We will reserve our final judgement until we can thoroughly test the new Maverick Tremor back in Colorado.

The Tremor package also includes lots of cosmetic changes. There is a code-orange grille trim up front, orange front tow hooks, blacked-out front headlight and tail light surrounds, tremor decals, and special embroidered Tremor seats, orange stitching on the inside, and blacked-out Ford badges.

The Maverick Tremor is configured to have around 1,200 lbs of maximum payload capacity and 2,000 lbs of maximum towing capability. You cannot add the 4K (4,000 lbs) towing package to the Tremor model. The Maverick FX4 can be had with the 4K towing package, and the FX4 offers a higher payload that can reach around 1,400 lbs.

The FX4 package can be had with a 2.0-liter turbo AWD Maverick XLT and Lariat for an additional $800. The Tremore package costs $2,995, plus there is an additional Tremor appearance package that you can get for $1,495 on top of the Tremor package. There is around a $2,195 difference between the FX4 and Tremor packages. Without driving both trucks, I think that the Maverick Tremor truck is an attractive and affordable option to get into a capable off-road-ready compact pickup truck.
