Is the new 2022 Rivian R1T worth a closer look? We get to spend an extended time with it and find all of its gadgets and gizmos. The R1T is an all-electric pickup truck that offers quad-motor AWD and upwards of 835 horsepower and 906 lb-ft of torque. It’s not just about the blindingly quick acceleration. It offers comfortable seating for five and a 4’7” bed that extends to nearly seven feet with a gooseneck-hinged tailgate.
This truck hides a flashlight inside the front driver’s door, a portable speaker under the front center console, and an onboard air compressor with a hose that can reach all of its tires. Ther is a full-size spare tire underneath the bed floor, and a special tire-changing mode that prevents the suspension from changing its height while you jack it up. When you do need extra ground clearance, the Off-Road mode allows the R1T suspension to extend up and provide around 15 inches of clearance.
The R1T is rated at a maximum payload of 1,760 lbs (the Launch Edition – Adventure model you see here has a payload of 1,419 lbs). It is also rated to tow up to 11,000 lbs. The door lock sound is a chirp of a Mountain Bluebird that Rivian recorded in the Yellowstone National Park. The Meridian sound system is one of the best we have heard in any vehicle.
